Hi, I was wondering if I could get insightful opinions on some components that I purchased for a new PC build. I was in a local Computer shop last week and saw that they had a Nvidia GTX 3090 in stock and at a much reduced price as from what they were last year, so as a passion buy I jumped on it. Of course I them found out it would need a much powerful.........well, everything.
So far I went ahead and got AMD Ryzen 9 7000 series Zen 4 architecture Socket AM5 and an MSI Pro X670-P (Lightning Gen 5). I plan on adding a 1000watt power supply and 64 Gig off DDR 5. So given these specs , am I going the right direction for a rendering system for DAZ, Iclone and Blender? Expert opinions would be greatly appreciated Thanks!!

Yep, right direction for sure. Make sure you get a quality PSU, I like EVGA their warranty is top notch. If you can, there are some good Black Friday deals right now, the 7950 is at a good price.
Thank you for the feedback. So one thing I was curious about is about using the ddr5. Are there any compatability issues with any versions of DAZ? I am cutrrent using a system with ddr4 with 32 Gig of ram. Sometimes I get a bit of a bog down just as I click render. In other words it seems to take about 30 seconds or so before I start seeing the render progession bar, but Only when I have scenes with several characters in it. So I am always curous if faster ram in larger quanities would help.
How much difference would there be performance wise between a Ryzen 9 7900 X and a 7950 X?
...while both have 12 cores/24threads the 7900 has a base clock speed of 3.8 GHz while the 7900x is 4.7 GHz. The real big difference is in power consumption the TDP for the 7900 is only 65W while the TDP for the 7900x is 170W (so you would need either liquid cooloing or a top end air CPU cooler). The 7900 has not been released yet (planned for Q1 of next year) so I had to use projected specs from articles on tech sites.
All Zen4 CPUs only support DDR5 memory so you would have to purchase all new memory instead of just expand what you have. Currently DDR5 is running about twice the price of DDR4 for 64 GB For 128 GB (if you are looking to get a 3090 or 4090) there are no kits yet, so it would be two 64GB kits (total 4 x 32) which again comes to about twice the cost of a comparable DDR4 kit.
...bugger yet another bad gateway timeout Seems Daz needs to update their servers.
Thanks Kyoto Kid, that is very good info, and unfortunately I am aware of how expensive this build will be, but theres no turning back now, lol. I was actually asking about the difference between the 7900x and the 7950x. I know the 7950x has 16 cores but how much difference would that make compared to the 7900x's 12 cores?
For the current version of Daz zero, other than the slightly higher boost clock of the 7950x. Same with games. Studio 5 is supposed to make more use of multiple cores but I do not know if that high count will matter.
You might use other apps that will use lots of cores like Zbrush, Blender, Photoshop, etc.
Doesn't 3Dlight take advantage of high core counts?
Yes 3delight, and Iray if using CPU, will merrily take up all cores. However, most parts of DS do not lend themselves to multi-threading - I don't know how much that will change in "Daz Studio 5"
Well I just purchased a Ryzen 9 7900x at a local computer Shop (I just prefer "Brick and Mortar" ) and it went for $599.00 and I just heard AMD dropped the price down to the low $400's so I was thinking about just going back and return the 7900x (I have not opened box yet) and getting the 7950x instead for just around $700 since it is actually closer to a price that is attainable from online resource (again, not a big fan of ordering hardware online). Anyway, wondering if the 7950x would be a bigger boost and have staying power before an upgrade is merited.
...remember that both the 7900X and 7950X draw way more power than the 7900. It may not be so much a factor for your PSU but it will be for cooling. I'm looking at a 5950X (staying with DDR4) and will be using a Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro (don't wish to sacrifice the upper exhaust fans for a closed loop liquid radiator so staying with active air cooling) The 5950X has a TDP of 105W v. 170W for the 7900X/7950X. As I also use 3DL and Carrara as well as other operations, I need all the cores/threads I can get. My system is also strictly a work machine.
While the 7950X is currently on sale, the cost differnce would be made up by the price of DDR5 memory and likely closed loop liquid cooling for the CPU. WIl be running a 12 GB 3060 (which I already have)
BTW for those who have seen the other upgrade proposals for my system that were based on Broadwell Xeons, I received very helprul feedback from the AMD forums that the 5950X (and even the 7000 series) will support W7 64 with a minor workaround. .Saves me a few hyundred while using more up to date tech and staying with an OS I prefer.
I would see if the shop will give you the difference on the 7900x and just keep that. I don't know if you would see much of a difference in Daz Use between those two processors.
The 200+ youd save, I would put towards a 4TB NVME Drive, help with the cost of the 4090, or bumping up to 128 in RAM.
Sounds like your system will be a monster when done.
Congrats!
Right now for Daz? Not a lot. Assuming you stick to the 3090s 24gb. When I sold my mining system I also sold the 3900x in my Daz system and replaced it with a 3700x. Don't miss the extra 4 cores at all in Daz. It takes a render about 5-10 seconds longer to start. I really should have gone for the 5600x instead of the 3700.
Thats not to say in future the software may benefit from more threads. I'd bet that if/by the time that happens you might have been in the market for an AMD cpu upgrade anyway. I wouldn't personally buy a 12+ core chip right now if I didn't have a use for it immediately. Ie video rendering.
Thanks for all the great info!!! So, would there be much of a change in rendering times at all using 3DL if I went ahead and exchanged the Amd 7900x for the 7950x. Would the power draw and cooling requirements be that big of a change between the two. For what I already paid it would be about $120 to upgrade to the 7950x. Is it worth the bother? As mentioned above I am planning on throwing 64 GB of DDR5 in the setup, would that make any diference in that notorious bog down before rendering starts with either CPU or GPU. Would it make any sense to add even more ram?
