A friend of mine is offering to sell me his PC which has a 1TB hard drive, AMD Phenom II processor, and 6 GB memory. It is running Windows 7. Which Nvidia graphics card should I get in order to render using IRay for this machine?

more Cuda Cores = faster. More vram = more detailed (more characters, more scenery, etc) can be loaded. Good cards are pricey. 4 GB Vram prob min you should consider now.
Think about at least a GTX 970. GTX980TI gives about 90% of Titan performacne for about 60% of Titan money. You may (probably) meed a bigger power supply. That PC may not actually be very useful for this. I personally haven't done anything w/ AMD for years.
He's upgrading it for a reason; likely more than one.
It isn't really powerful enough, and although a 970 (hell even a titan x) is likely to work ok in it; it could have a detrimental affect on how long it lasts and could very well not work as well as it should. The system is no where near the mark of a 970. A good i5 at a push, preferably at least a decent i7 with 16GB RAM minimum. An SSD would be good, but better more memory than an SSD. Depends on your budget, and if all you can afford is you friend's PC then if it is an upgrade then try it out.
There's some advice about graphics cards and other information on this thread: I'm getting a new computer and they gave me some great advice.
