  • Blender, Hexagon (though not across seams, as I recall), 3D Coat, Substacne Painter, ZBrush, Mari - and no doubt many others, depending on what features you want. Any image editor will let you paint on a flat image using a UV template showing how the result will wrap around the model, but keeping things in scale and amtching across seams can be tricky.

I think you CAN do that with Photoshop, but it's not the best tool for the job. Substance Painter is the industry standard, along with 3DCoat and Blacksmith3D.

I don't keep up with Photoshop since I refuse to sign up for their "licensing" system, but I thought the 3D eleemnts had been removed from the latest CC version in favour of Substance Painter.

Oh, that's quite likely now that you mention it. Photoshop's 3D tools were pretty miserable anyway, so I doubt they'll be missed.

  • Blacksmith3d is currently half off in Renderosity's Black Friday sale until Monday night, just FYI.

I like Substance Painter, as it's popular enough that there are many tutorials and support etc. If youre doing texture painting a lot,the efficiencies granted by a purpose built software like Substance Painter probably pays for itself.

Blender is probably fine for basic stuff, but I always found baking out textures to be tedious and annoying in Blender.

Basic edits can probably be done in a 2D editor if you dont need to go across seams.

    it is like Substance Painter.

  • 3D Coat does have a texturing-only version, which is cheaper than the full version. I am too incompetent to give maningful advice on the applications' usabiolity, but 3D Coat did have a simpler set up for painting than ZBrush.

True but the Normal map module is really really nice.  I wish they would keep that at least!

Never cared for the work flow in ZBrush for painting.  Esp using the Light Room which is the preferred way for those that use this tool.  I'm still getting my head around Substance Painter.  It's still got some ways to go before I can really say it's the "cats meow" of all the painting apps.  3D Coat is pretty nice.  Tried out MudBox and didn't see what all the fuss was about truthfully.  Blender and I are still not on speaking terms but I want to like it, truly!  LOL

  • Windows 10 had an included  3D paint app (I uninstalled with difficulty)

  • https://pilgway.com/product/3dcoattextura  Has a free trial to download. IF one has the full 3DCoat program, Textura is not required {included in 3DCoat}.

n.b. where their homeland is as they may have electrical power issues etc from time to time.
