Focus and Defocus Iray Render

Hi! I'd like to know if there's a product which focus and defocus far areas in an Iray render? Mainly for saving Vram.

I hope so can tell me, thanks!

  • I'm not sure what you mean - Scene Optimiser shows the distance to nodes and allows for resizing maps.

For example this render, how you can see, the background is defocus, while the character and the closest areas are focused.

The camera has the ability to use Depth of Field as you show in that image but I doubt whether it saves VRAM. You could use an HDRi rather than props to create you background and HDRis come in lower resolutions which is fine for out-of-focus backgrounds but, again, I doubt that would save much VRAM.

  • Depth of field can be turned on in any camera, but I don't think that will make a difference for VRAM, or at least not if I understand how it's working correctly.

That is due to camera depth of focus and Fstop, not a specific VRAM saving device. If you create a camera, then set depth of focus and Fstop you will see an effect like the one in the image. It works in the same way as a film camera, though the numbers are not the same. The larger the Fstop, the smaller the depth of field [hang on a sec, might have got this the wrong way round]. You will need to experiment quite a lot to get the most out of it. Regards, Richard.

Just as a note on that last point, since it may not be obvious to people using this for the first time. While you definitely may be experimenting to get the final look you want, just want to make sure anyone newly checking out the DOF options in the cameras know that the camera model in the scene will show a cone with indicators of the start and end of the cameras focus range, so fortunately that can help you at least visualize where to place it in relating to whatever you are framing.

BTW, the demo image uses UltraHD, which has HDRIs that have the option of a built-in DOF or not. The built-in has the world center in focus.

I've seen some tutorials in youtube. I'm going to try it. Thank you for the information, guys!
