Video Card Memory and RAM

Hey guys, I just have a quick question. I just ordered the GTX970 which has 4gb of memory. Will that help out with my 8GB ram. Scenes are pretty tight right now and when I render with Iray it shoots right up to 7gb. So I was hoping that the 4gb will help with that. I'm only doing mainly portraits and simple scenes. Nothing too big.

Probably not -- I know GPU rendering does some optimization of materials, but if the scene is still too big to fit on the card it won't be used for rendering. The GPU RAM and system RAM don't supplement each other -- each GPU (if you have more than one) uses just its own RAM, and the CPU just uses the system RAM.
It's a good value card for rendering; I've not yet had mine maxed out memory, although I did get it to 3.8GB by upping the resolution of the scene; there was some scene items and four dressed figures iirc for that test. Planning on adding a 980ti at some stage so I can lose the pathetic GT 640 I use for display and use the 970 instead.
But to answer your question, gfx card memory won't help with normal; another 8GB of main memory would likely help with general perfomance if you multitask a lot (multiple different applications open at the same time).
The GTX will help out. The PC memory is shooting up because the scene is loading into RAM. Portraits and simple scens will use less than 3GB. I do those tye most often and haven't had any issues w/ a GTX780 (3GB).
Thanks a lot for the help guys!
