Free textures for 3d models

Hello, I wonder if there is a website where I can take free textures for use in my 3d models. My intention is to sell the model in the DAZ store. I also want to know if there is any impediment from DAZ. I was thinking for example CGTextures, but it is not entirely clear. Regards.

  • The big caveat to using truly free textures is that they tend to be fairly low quality. Those of a higher quality tend to come under a license that states you're not allowed to use them for commercial uses.

If you're genuinely going to sell it on the Daz store it's worth your time to do it right and create your own textures for it. Not only will you have fewer legal issues, but you'll probably get more sales. People can often spot 'freebie' textures a mile away.

CG textures do have some sort of license for Commercial stuff.   http://www.cgtextures.com/content.php?action=license           Plus a usage FAQ   http://www.cgtextures.com/

Also the larger, better quality textures are only available if you become a member

Yes, I was just thinking about that website. Apparently if they allow use textures as a part of 3d model only. Low resolution textures look bad with iray. Thank you for your advice.

What that means is you can use the textures to texture part of a model, but it mustn't be possible to extract the textures from the model as it was shown on the site. SO in other words you can't put one of their textures onto, for example a picture, and then include it in your model. However you can use one to texture the frame of the picture, if you see what I mean.

However, in the main, if you want to sell commercially you are much better off not relying on free textures.  There are very few sites like CG textures which does allow you to use their textures. Most of the other free texture sites do not allow any commercial usage.  I do know off a few PAs who use CG textures, but they do join as members.

I even purchase merchant resources to produce my freebies.

Well, as I said CG textures is good, but I reccommend a membership there, rather than a free account.  Do a Google search for Merchant resources. It does depend a lot on what sort of textures you are looking for.  I use mainly fabric textures. There are some merch resources in the store here, and also at other large brokerages such as Rendo and RDNA.

Here's the deal with cgtextures. While you can use their textures for commercial use, it's better not to use them unmodified. If you do release them unmodified, you also need to include a disclaimer stating that the textures were from the site, and requesting not to distribute them. Obviously, they're not allowed to be released as-is for texture packs to be resold either.

The best use of those textures is to use them as a base to build your own textures, or arrange pieces of them to fit a UV map, for example. One great way of using some of the materials is to use it as a photoshop brush to add details to other textures. I recall one PA saying they used pictures of meat to enhance a skin texture by turning into a photoshop brush. Little techniques like this can go a long way.
