It's not clear how to submit a bug report

DS crashed on me a little while ago.  Nothing in my workspace/project but a naked lady.  Errr, I know what you're thinking but honestly, it wasn't like THAT!  I was merely trying to find morph and parameter dials to spin before putting clothing on her, really!  blush  wink

So I followed the procedure to submit a bug report.  The link sent me to the knowledgebase/help page, which has two links for "request help" and "report a problem".  I selected the latter, and the next page was the "request help" page.

I don't need help.  Well, don't ask my friends about that, but I digress.  I just want to do my community service by submitting my bug report zip file along with a brief description of what I was doing at crash time.  Then I want to get on with my life.  smiley

I still have the zip file, but I don't really know how to send it to DAZ.  The "help" pages once again are not very helpful, hmmm.  What should I do next?

Go to http://www.daz3d.com/help/help-contact-us/ , create an account if you haven't already, then click on the Submit button under the section "Submit a help request".  One of the dropdowns lets you specify where to submit your request, select the option that's something like "technical support".  Provide the exact steps necessary to reproduce the problem so they can try it, and attach anything that might be useful like your log file, screenshots, etc.

Okay.  It turns out that this one is easily repeatable on my system.  It crashes with an access violation every time I try to click on the "shaping" tab in DS with a figure selected (which is what you're suppsoed to do).  Here's the symptom of the "eew yuck"...

Okay, so the forum "Code snippett" function is a major fail; you lose word-wrap.  So here it is just in a different color.

    DAZStudio.exe caused ACCESS_VIOLATION in module "F:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\DAZStudio4\QtCore4.dll" at 0033:0000000073F48A20, QMapData::shared_null()

I'll submit the dump and other stuff to DAZ.

    Dump sent to DAZ; thanks.

    Edit:

I did also try running it in administrator mode, as well as in Windows 7 Mode (this machine is on Windows 8.1 and was just updated this morning).  Unfortunately, I don't remember the last time I used the Shaping tab.  In a little while, I'll try the same thing on my Windows 10 laptop.

  • Hmmm....the shaping tab works on the laptop.  I doubt that the cause is the OS version.  I think I probably need to reinstall DAZ Studio 4.8 on the Windows 8.1 machine.

  • I was able to correct the problem.  Here are the steps I took:

    1.  More testing.  I clicked on the "shaping" tab with an empty scene.  Tab opened, no problem.  Next, I tried to load a figure.  Crash.  Same offset as noted above.

    2.  Thinking about what is different between my Windows 10 laptop (which works) and my Windows 8.1 desktop (which didn't work), I remembered that I had added Reality to the desktop but not to the laptop.  So I removed the Reality folders from the folder sequence in the DS content preference settings on the desktop.  Now DAZ crashed upon startup/loading a figure!  With the same offset too, so now I know I'm onto something, hah!

So now I knew I'd need to uninstall and reinstall DS to a fresh directory.

    3.  I used DIM to uninstall the 4.5+ SDKs, and then to uninstall DS 64 bit version 4.8.0.59.

    4.  Next, I located the install folder (I knew it was on my F partition inside of the "Program Files" structure), and I renamed it to "~~ (Bad)".  This effectively eliminates all legacy cruft from the install folder, which still had lots of clutter in it even after a DIM uninstall of DS.

    5.  While doing 4 above, I used DIM to download the 32 bit version.  Normally I use 64 bit only, but I thought I might need to compare the two (but as you will see below, I didn't have to test the 32 bit version).

    6.  I verified my DIM folder settings, then I used DIM to install the 32 and 64 bit versions of  4.8 build 59.  No problems with the 64 bit version.  Now I can see (what appears to be) all of my content, and I can load something and click on the "Shaping" tab, which now seems to behave correctly without causing a crash.

    7.  Next, I reinstalled the 3 SDK items and retested.  Still working.

    8.  Finally, I uninstalled DS 4.8.0.59 (32 Bit) and retested the 64 bit version.  Still working.

I'm happy I fixed it, but I wasn't able to create anything or accomplish any real work.  And after all that trouble I think it's time for a Stella or a glass of wine.  Is anybody with me?  wink
