After Midnight Club - Many Camera Positions Render Black

I just picked up the After Midnight Club scene - all the cameras provided work fine, but if you move them a bit or use the Perspective View it often turns all black.  I can't figure out why.  There's a fog object in the middle, but hide it or delete it from the scene it doesn't make a difference.

Does anyone in sam hill know what is a going on here?

Well, I do have this item in my libary so I will take a look in a bit. My initial thoughts would be that perhaps the render setting is not compatible with the lighting - i.e. if it's an indoor asset with no windows and it's set to only use HDRIs

  • I don't have the product, but for me when it's all black in texture preview it's because the only light sources are emissive surfaces. Options are to turn on the headlamp if you are looking through a camera (not perspective view, or I don't remember how to turn on a headlamp in perspective view if it's possible) and remember to turn it off when rendering. You could also switch to the iray preview mode, which I believe should work with emissive surfaces, or personally I switch to something like hidden wireframe so I can navigate the scene quickly.

  • It could be that when you move the camera you end up inside a wall, or something, as well.

I have it and just did a couple of tests. Works without any issues over here for all included cameras. Have loaded the included Render Preset? What version DS are you using?

All camera positions are working OK for me too in iray mode. It is pretty black by default in texture preview but you can fix that with the preview lights - I think Ctrl-L is the default keybinding but if not then it's under the window menu. I did notice that moving about it would go black again but I think that was when the camera entered inside a tree, one of those column things or some furnature - If I stayed out in the open area about mid-height I could "fly" around fine while still seeing things.

Thanks for the reply.  I'm using Daz Studio 4.21.0.5.  Same for me, all the included cameras work.  I also tried the included render preset, no difference.

It's when you move a camera towards the center it happens.  There's a fog object, but that's not it.  Otherwise there's no objects that I can see colliding.

    I FOUND THE ISSUE!

It's certainly weird.  It's the ceiling.  Specifically, the material labeled glass.  Set your preview to Nvidia Iray.  Move a camera towards the center of the screen, and it will go black.  When that happens, find the Ceiling Object, then set the Cutout Opacity of the Glass material to 0.  Voila, no more black Iray render.  I also changed that material with a glass shader, and it still works.  Both the standard Iray Daz Uber "Glass - Thin - Clear" and "Glass - Solid - Clear" work.  You could also leave the opacity at 0 for a little faster rendering.  Hope this helps anyone.

Yes, indeed. I played around some more and I see the same effect. It happens when the camera moves under the ceiling windows. The problem is that the glass in the ceilng is a single polygon layer but the materials is set up for physcal glass. The "Thin Walled" parameter should be set to ON for this material. What happens is that when you move into the area below the windows the renderer treats it as if you are going into a solid glass cube resulting in total reflection and darkness. Simply switching thin-walled to ON fixes it. The other option wopuld be to replace the single window layer with a thin cube primitive to have a double side glass (not really useful).

  • Ahh, that is absolutely the issue.  I confirmed turning on thin walled corrects the issue for me as well.  Thanks again!
