Is rendering to minimized window less GPU intensive?

Rendering using 4.7 3Delight apparently makes no difference, going to file or to window, from this thread:
https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/60933/is-it-faster-to-render-in-a-new-window-or-direct-to-file
Is it still the same with 4.21 Iray? When rendering with 4.21 Iray to minized output window, the fans on my PC is quiet, but as soon as I open up the output window to take a peek, the fans go loudly again.
I am not sure what it means. If not faster, is rendering without looking at the output less intensive on the GPU?
Thank-you!

Setting your preview window to 'bounding box' rather than Iray, or Texture Shaded, etc, should reduce the load on your GC during render time (as it's not calculating both images).
Not sure about just minimising the render window, but if it doesn't update that window until you maximise it again, then I guess it might help. Render to file should help a little as it's not displaying multiple updates mid-render. Whether you'd notice it or not, might depend on how stressed your GC is with the scene.
*Caveat: I may be wrong
I believe the preview window freezes when a real render starts, so I don't think it will grab any of the GPU until the full render is finished. However, like you said, I could be wrong too.
3DL rendering only uses the CPU, and when DS is minimised then the PC likely assigns it a lower priority to grabbing available CPU, so maybe that is why you noticed a drop in fan speed. It would likely have needed longer to complete the render in this case, but at least it would be quieter. Since Iray mostly uses the GPU to render (if you have one) then I suspect its usage of it would not drop (or if so very little) even when minimised.
