Only relevant for users who like to see e.g. an HDRI panorama in Affinity Photo like it will be shown in the DS Env Dome.

I just learned that APhoto has a "Live Projection" feature and thought I post about it here:

Normal Flat projection:

Live Projection:

Projection and navigation like in DS:

Projection0.jpg
1920 x 1037 - 272K
Projection1.jpg
744 x 520 - 66K
Projection2.jpg
1920 x 1037 - 280K

Photo version 1 or 2?  I've recently upgraded to version 2 or Designer and Photo.  Like them both allot.  Still waiting for some more improvements to Photo before I decide if it's mature enough to drop Photoshop!

  • I found it in V1.

I am still undecided regarding V2. Still no normal installer to test (just this Windows store app msix nobody wanted) and most bugs and limitations from V1 are still in V2. Maybe I  buy before the launch offer ends on 14th and refund it within the 30 day period if there is again no sign that Serif is going to finally take care of the bugs and start to implement at least the oldest requested features (e.g. for seven years users are asking for a keyboard shortcut to adjust brush opacity, flow and hardness).

I actually read up on msix and I like that better.  Cleaner and less issues that could crop up.  Read up on it here

Hey, it does! One learns something new every day. LOL. I'm still using V1, BTW as I haven't bought the new version yet ;)

I know about that thread - and theoretically the msix installer and letting the apps be store apps running sandboxed could be beneficial for some users.

But the reality is written in this thread.

This storm of disapointed users forced Serif to go back to the drawing board and promise there will be a normal application and normal installer back.

  • a few image and video viewers actually do this too including the default Windows 10 ones

I have accidently clicked it on normal images

Interesting. I am always struggling to make HDRIs, but good to know,

there is something to look them the other way.

Still do not understand, why app would be better, than the normal program.

    Maybe on the tablet.

Great, that they may change that.

Can you edit them too?... I have two nice ones from PolyHaven that have a small seams in a spot (very wispy clouds)... it's probably never going to be noticeable, but it would cool to be able to blend them.

I know major alterations are supposed to mess with the lighting values, but these are tiny blends.

    yes you can. yes

well, at least I have done so... I'm on V1 also, haven't upgraded yet.

  • @McGyver,

The Inpainting Brush might be the tool to fix your seam issue.

You can edit 32 bit images to your liking in Affinity Photo. Most tools work well. I use it e.g. for compsiting LPE canvases coming out of DS and adjusting light, color, contrast etc. in HDR environments.

There is even a way to create your own non destructive tone mapping tool by using custom "Procedural Textures".

Some might consider it being "complicated" to set up, but for me it was worth it.

This 32 bit functionality of Affinity is the no. 1 reason I bought the software initially and still like to use it - and because all of it is already in V1 there is no need to go for V2.

Now that is very cool - thanks for posting this, @cgidesign.

Stezza and cgidesign... Thanks for the info! I was thinking of getting Affinity soon and now this is another good reason to add it to my software hoard.

Maybe I can finally make my own HDRIs with the light.

    I use V1 because I still use Windows 7, so I couldn't install V2 if I bought it, LOL.

There are a couple of good new features in V2, but nothing to justify rushing out and updrading to Windows 10 or 11.

i have version 1 and 2. Equirectangular operates the same in both versions.

To use MSIX installed apps with programs like FastStone ImageViewer here is one way to do it:

    1. create a batch (text) file. Mine is named: Affinity_Photo_v2.bat

    2. Type into the file the following instructions:

    start /b affinityphoto2.exe %1
    exit

    3. Save file and place in a folder you can reach from the program you want to access AfP.

Did the same thing for Designer and Publisher. They work great wiith FastStone ImageViewer.

I do realize that this solution will not work for everyone.

  • Yes, a lot of workarounds in the affinity's forum regarding the msix installer. But Serif is anyway offering a normal msi in the future (they hope before christmas but were not sure if they can keep that). Also interesting is some testing users did. They wrote they noticed around 20% loss of GPU performance because of the sandboxing of Windows APPs.

Luckily Serif decided to extend the launch offer to 25th of Jan - I hope the non sandboxed apps including first bugfixes are available before that and they offer a new trial period for that.
