If I remember correctly, Daz Studio needs to be installed by either Daz Central or Daz Install Manager so you would need to install Central first if that is your preferred installer. That does seem to be backed up by the fact that the link to "Download Studio" on this webpage redirects to the download Central page.

Congrats on the new computer :)

  • Daz Studio can be installed using a stand-alone isntaller, but mixing methods is not a good idea so I would suggest installing Daz Central (or Install Manager if you want to customise the paths rather than justs et a base location) first, then using it to install the application and plug-ins.

  • I have been studying DAZ Connect, DIM, and Daz Centrel. I have been using Connect, J tried DIM, but it would not work on my system.

My new computer has HDD and SSD and I read on another post in the Daz forums that you dont want to put your content in SSD. Where will Daqz Central place the content? What is the difference between Daz Central and DIM?

Not sure who said you can't put your content on an SSD, but it's not true.

Most SSD's will outlast any mechanical drive(HDD). There's always the chance you get a terrible SSD, but those aren't all that common.

I've got 2 that are over 5 years old and still running great.

I've got my 1.7TB main library on an firecuda 520 m.2 NVME drive.

I've got my backup library on a 6TB Western Digital "My Book" usb portable drive.

As long as the drive is good, it really doesn't matter what type of drive you install your 3D stuff on.

    ---

In my opinion DIM really is your best option for install methods.

I would follow Richard's advise, he's really good at this :)

  • Daz central lets you set one location and places everythign in a sub-folder, so it is simpler to do but less flexible. Daz Install Manager uses separately settable locations for different types of content (and my default keeps the zips, which can be handy if you frequently uninstall/reinstall content). You will get the default paths for whichever application you install first - if that's Install Manager the the Daz Central configuration screen will say that paths are managed by Install Manager.

I think the reason people suggest not installing content to an SSD is simply size - a cotnent library can grow very large, depending on how much content you buy/download and how scrupulous you are about uninstalling things you don't need. There isn't a lot of benefit to having the content on SSD, but it would probably give at least some speed boost to loadign large objects or sending data to be rendered (when the full size versions of images need to be loaded).

  • Which one is best for content location and order to see and use what is where?

  • I am leaning toward DIM, I like the part about storring the zip files  when setting up DIM. Do I make the choice to use the HDD when setting up right?

\When I setup DIM there is no Connect or Central rigtht?

Central and DIM are broadly different faces of the same thing - it's just that Central hides a lot of options to make a simpler experience. Central does have the ability to launch the application and tell it to load a piece of content correction, have DS run a guided lesson to show how to load the content, which DIM lacks (currently - see http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/install_manager/change_log#1_4_0_108 for 1.4.1.1 to 1.4.1.3). Connect is not affected in any way by using either of the external installers.

In DIM click the gear icon at top-right to get a menu offering basic and advanced settings. That includes setting paths for downloads (the zips), manifests (the reciords of what it has installed), the database (used by Daz Studio, Carrara, and the Installers to track the content available to the application), and the content isntalls (Daz Studio and the installers need to know where the content is being placed - if you chnage the location in DIM you will also need to change/add that location in Daz Studio).

  • Richard, you seem to know alot about Daz Studio and DIM. How do tou organize your Runtime in DIM.

  • I mainly install content through Connect, but currently I have one main content directory for not-my-own content (store and freebies), oen for my own files, and one as a test location for things like freebies and stores without DIM support (so I can more easily track down the fiels when adding metadata, or fixing errors, then I move them across to the main content directory; that dosn't break the database entries as those are relative to the content directory without a record of which content directory it is)

  • Richard, I read in a post, Daz installation, a person mentioned that you had a strategy for installing scripts. Wll you please explain this process, Thank You.

  • A strategy for installing scripts in what respect?

  • I saw your first name in another post and assumed it was you. I have my new Desktop and am installing my content. I tried Daz Central and found it wanting.

I am using Daz Connect and have learned its many facets.

  • Daz Connect canot handle everything, though ti can handle most content (there are a few exceptions). There is also Daz Install Manager https://www.daz3d.com/get_install_manager/ which will initially pick up the folders used by Daz Central but you can customise it - whether that is a good thing will depend on what issues you had with Daz Central.

  • Daz Central had to many installation failures, where as Dasz Connect is much better at Content Installation. I hope there is no conflict between the two on paths or location.

  • Daz Connect does not conflict with other isntall methods, Install manager and daz Central do use the same detinations (but should see each others installations so that should avoid issues).

  •

I installed the Daz Studio files and tried to set up the Poser runtimes like I did with my Windows7 and Studio 4.11 and it is not working the same

    I need help.

  • What are you content directories and where are the files?

  • The Documents just below the Daz3d folder.

  • The name of the folder is Poser and in that folder is 2014 Download, 2012 Download etc.

Is that where the content is or what you have set as the content directory? They sound like the content libraries used by Poser for its own installs of files, which I thought few people used.

  • I got somewhere, I right clicked on Poser Format and added the folder 2012 download and it worked as I loaded an item and it showed up in the viewport.

  • I have alot of Poser Content as back in the day, 2004 Poser was way ahead of Daz Studio and most of the content was for Poser. Daz Studio has

advaced to where its better than Poser but the ability to use Poser Formats is still there which is good. Poser has changed owners alot and lost a certain

amount of community and relavancy, for instance Runtime DNA moved to Daz, but brought the content with them and many of their content ideas with them

I know they are competiters, but there is a link both in community and content. I still use both
