Hey all...
I'm looking to hire a 3D artist to do some 3D avatars for my website... Kind of like a superhero / gamer on steroids kind of look. Male and female.
Can anyone direct me to where I can find good 3D artists to hire?

You are quite surrounded by them.
PM me with your details. I might be able to help.
What is your budget for this? How many avatars do you need? More info would be helpful.
I'd definitely be interested, more details would be appreciated.
Okay.. i"m not sure what I'm allowed to post here. My website is leetgamer.com. We are just launching. We are giving away gaming gear for free. Our first giveaway starts next week. As far as budget, I'd prefer explain exactly what I need and have you give me a cost to do it right.
Essentially I want a matching male and female character, typical skyrim-style. Bulky and brooding. Except that instead of just armor, he has part armor, part spacesuit, part military gear. Sword in one hand, AR-15 in the other kind of thing. In short, an avatar that demonstrates all of the different gaming genre's in one persona. And a female counterpart. Our logo will be emblazened in their chest. So a very creative piece that I can pose and modify for my needs as we use it on shirts, apparrel, the website, etc. Does that help?
Please contact me at shaun@leetgamergear.com if you are interested. Let's look over your portfolio and figure out if it's something you can do.
Ok, you're running into a whole nest of hornets here. You're not looking for an image. You're asking for a royalty free model that you can re-configure at your will. That's not strictly a 3D artist. My images are built around models that have been created and sold. My images are mine. The models are not. You also imply exclusivity. That, too, comes at a price. As I calculate you will need to budget about $200.00+ per figure. To do your bid, I would have to design the figure, the outfit, the weapons, and any additional pieces. I cannot, by law, use an AR-15 from another designer. She retains all rights on that model. This drills down to details as minute as hair, makeup, skin, and nail color. Also, if you look at the store, gaming rights cost about 3x the cost of one who would simply make an image. While not impossible; your request is, out of scope for what I do. You should contact/contract with a PA (one who creates the products that we buy).
My best suggestion is that you contract with a modeller/artist who's willing to buy into your project and sacrifice immediate compensation for a piece of the total package. I hope you find what you need.
Kind regards,
Okay... $200+ per figure doesn't sound outrageous at all.. But I guess I'm reading the long story that it's something you don't want to do...? Thanks for the feedback.
I've hired sculptors in the past to create me characters. I just figured the 3D modeling route would be a more robust option. I'm not new to modeling myself. I've been modeling since 1992 on the original 3dStudio. But I've not time (and frankly not the talent) as artists here. So the offer is still open.
And many of us are definitely interested in accepting. There are certain roadblocks and obstacles that need to be ovecome first, and other legal issues you need to understand as well. The main issue Etrigan brought up is the EULA for using DAZ content, as well as the various licening agreements for using content from other vendors (be they paid for or freebie), this being that we are legally not allowed to redistribute the meshes textures, etc of that vendor without their express permission. Any content created by another vendor that we use is restricted from redistribution unless said content is specifically licensed as a merchant resource, which does allow for the redistiribution of derivitive content. What we can do, however, is create the characters, dress them, and save them as scene subset DUF files to send. However, in order for you to open those files, you would need to have your own copies of every piece of content used in the production of those files. This includes base figures, morphs, hair, clothes, textures, props, everything. The only content we can legally redistribute is meshes and textures we create ourselves from scratch, which some of us do. Even then, most of us create content to be used by figures produced by DAZ or other vendeors, such as making clothes for the Genesis and Genesis 2 and Genesis 3 figures, for example, which come with DAZ Studio. For example. If I made a character for a client using Genesis, the Genesis Evolution head and body morphs, the M4 Cyberpunk set, the M4 bodysuit, SickleYield's free M4 Trench coat, Bossy Boots for Genesis, and the DAZ motorcycle Helmets and saved that final character as a DUF Scene Subset file, the client would need to purchase his or her own copies of all of that content. I could not send him copies of the actual content used. It's against the EULA and licensing agreements with the vendors, and against the law.
Also, if you want to use these characters in games, you'll need a special Game Developer EULA as well as writtem permission from any independent vendors not directly associated with DAZ whose content was used.
So, yes, some of us are definitley interested, myself included, but we are bound by the EULA and licensing agreements with the vendors whose content we use. If you can accept those restrictions and accommodate them, then we'd be happy to take on this project. Otherwise, you'll have to do like Etrigan suggested and contact a PA who can make everything from scratch for you, which would certainly cost a lot more than $200 per character.
I'm perfectly happy abiding by whatever restrictions or requirements the designer faces, whether they simply create the images I need from the characters they create on an ongoing basis, OR following guidelines for mesh turnover. That's clearly MY responsibility.
That having been said, for anyone interested, please email me at shaun@leetgamergear.com and provide me a link to your portfolio and let's discuss getting this project underway. I have a fairly tight timeframe..
Thanks all.
Also.. I own thousands of dollars worth of DAZ content already and will gladly purchase whatever daz content is necessary.
Thats good to hear. Just to clarify some things. These characters aren't going to be redistributed themselves, they're just mascots for the site; am I correct?
There is no way you can buy something for someone else. The only way to do that is with gift certs. And there is absolutely no way Mesh can be transferred from one prerson to another, that is completely against the DAZ 3D EULA.
I don't think that's what he means Chohole. Given my understanding, he's simply saying that he's willing to buy whatever copies of content he would need to be able to open up Scene subset files we might send him if we here hired to take on this job. So, if, for example, I used Cyberpunk for M4 for the project, and sent him the DUF file of the completed character, and he didn't already own that set, he'd be willing to buy Cyberpunk for M4 in order to open the Scene Subset DUF of the character. That's what I gathered from his post.
It still needed to be said, to make sure that everyone understands the ramifications of shared projects. Every person involved needs to have their own purchased copy of whatever is used.
I know, that's what both Etrigan and I have been telling him, and that was what he was responding and agreeing to with his last post.
I am not, for a moment, questioning TomEnokR's honesty or ethics, but, for the sake of the argument, I'm not convinced that he fully gets what we're saying. If he wants a "piece that I can pose and modify" then it's not an image he seeks, but a full blown rigged mesh or at least a DUF that can be reconfigured at will. He requests this project in time to "give away gaming gear for free". To me, that implies all, or parts, of the project. If I am wrong, I will easily stand corrected. As a technical writer, I can be pathologically anal about details, especially when negotiating for my services. If the project is what I envision it to be, it is far beyond my capabilities to complete.
TomEnokR, as to my portfolio, my gallery here is the best representation (see link in the signature block).
I asked him that specifically, and he's not going to be redistributing the characters. They're going to be used as mascots for his site, and that entails being put into different poses and actions, probably to advertise his actual products.
I have done my due diligence, then. As I have already withdrawn my notice of interest, it's up to the successful bidder to enforce compliance with the rules and laws. May he/she see much profit from this project.
For the sake of argument, let's not assume I'm a novice, ok? I feel like I'm being strung through the ringer trying to hire someone to do a project.
I UNDERSTAND that for every single "asset" that you use from any 3rd party, both YOU and I are required to have purchased copies of said asset.
I ALSO understand that there are End User License Agreements that applies differently depending on how I want to use these assets / images. This is no different than any other industry whether it be software, intellectual assets, copyrighted images / designs, merchandise, logos, etc. etc. and etc. I deal with this constantly as the owner of a print / silk screening / embroidery / clothing / 3d Printing company, as well as an Intellectual properties investor.
And while I do appreciate the lengthy discussion everyone wants to have regarding what is and is not permissable, it's MY responsibility to comply with those requirements, which I have every intention of doing.
It seems to me, frankly, that some of you have talked yourselves out of a job (that you are otherwise qualified to do) based on analysis paralysis.
That having been said, I want someone to make me some mascots / avatars which meet the above criteria. These mascots, unless otherwise specified in future requests, are for the purpose of having on my website acting as "ambassadors" for my brand and promoting my giveaways, which are gaming systems, not Daz avatars. Is there the possibility that these may, in the future be productized? Possibly. And those licensing requirements will also be addressed, should we go that direction. These avatars can either be provided as images you procure for me on an ongoing basis based on poses / situations / medium which I request, OR... daz files through which I can purchase required assets and take from there. I frankly don't care which.
Now who wants to be an artist? I've received some of your emails of interest, thank you. I look forward to anyone else who wants to apply. I'll be selecting someone at the beginning of the week.
Thank you!
The biggest problem here is the fact that you are talking games. As already pointed out there are 2 different EULAs, one of wich covers normal usage and one of which covers games. And, depending on how the DAZ products are used within the games, there is always the possibilty that game dev licenses need to be purchased. There is one License for DAZ 3D Originals, and then individual licenses for those PAs who allow their products to be used in games. Game Dev licenses
As there appears to be no visible Presence on the internet at the moment, it is difficult to understand just what it is that you are requiring, and how this will work as regards EULAs and Licenses.
I do apolgise for not understanding. Your last post has now clarified things, which makes it a lot easier.
I have sent you a pm , check your forum in box please.
I,too, apologize for misunderstanding. Frankly, had your last post been your first, I would have understood. It took me 25 minutes to find your site. The artwork there is excellent and still beyond my abilities. My second failing is that I am not a gamer. I couldn't even master Mariocart in the 80s.
Best of luck in your endeavor.
