I don't think 4.6.2.120 will use PostgreSQL CMS.

PostgreSQL CMS is bundled with DAZ Studio 4 and Carrara 8.5.

Valentina CMS is the older version.

Sorry for my confusion, but ... earlier you said "No version of DS installs PostgreSQL CMS", but now you're saying "PostgreSQL CMS is bundled with DAZ Studio 4". I assume when you install DS4 it does indeed install the CMS that is bundled with this.

And is the version number of DAZ Studio 4 later than 4.6.2.*? If so that seems weird. I would assume if I have a version number above 4.* installed (which I do), then I have DAZ Studio 4 installed, and so I got the CMS bundled with it.

Hard to make sense out of it.

I mean that if you have DS4 (whether you got it back when it was version 4.0 or now when it's version 4.8), you will have PostgreSQL CMS available in your Product Library or DIM.  It is not included in any DS4 installer.  Valentina CMS used to be included in the DS4 installer, but is not included any more.

Okay, so since I have DS4 (between 4.0 and 4.8) and since that ensures I have PostgreSQL CMS available in my DIM (which I do, and it is installed), why do you say "I don't think 4.6.2.120 will use PostgreSQL CMS."?

What, it gets bundled but then it won't use it?

DIM and your Product Library always have the most recent versions, i.e. DS 4.8.0.59.  PostgreSQL CMS was added to the available products when DS was updated to use it.  So if you upgrade DS to the current version then PostgreSQL will work with it.

You need to understand the following chain of events...

In DS 4, DAZ itroduced the smart content, CMS, and as a database the selected Valentina. Valentina proved to be error prone and somewhat unstable, so DAZ decided to replace Valentina with postgres, providing transition tools for the users through DIM. You cannot activate postgres in a DAZ Studio released prior to the release of postgres CMS.

In your prefences pane in DAZ Studio, the is a Content Manager System Config, or not. If there is one telling you to configure postgres, your DS is built for postgres, but to be safe, I would go to DS 4.8 and let DIM take care of the Valentina uninsall and replacement with postgres for you.

Yes, thanks, I'm pretty sure I get that chain of events ... but my 4.6.2.120 version of DS should be after not prior to DS 4, whence came this introduction of smart content with CMS. But I somehow missed these "transition tools".

In my preferences pane there is no "Content Manager System Config". Closest thing is the Content Library tab, which provides access to a Content Directory Manager (among other things), but I noticed earlier that trying to use one of its features, i.e., creating a new container, always fails.

I will try the upgrade, as you suggested, and see what happens.

    Thanks again!

Thanks everyone!  With 4.8 installed the Smart Content looks to be working, with a few things in it already. And the Content Library shows all of my pre-existing stuff.

I was able to create a category, based on one particular folder and its subfolders, and I was able to add the category to a parent folder that I chose from down below the "Default" category -- in a logical place!

Very nice! That's what I needed to start moving towards a more properly organized set of content.

    :-)

    Paul
