So I am trying to apply this texture to this object but when I apply the texture the object turns total blue and I can't get the shield image to shrink down enough so it will show up on the object's front face. What am I not doing right? Is it the size and location of the shield vrs. the blue background?

That probably indicates that the model lacks UV mapping, which specifies which bit of the map gets applied to each polygon. This needs to be added in a modeller - did you make the shield or is it from another site?
Made in Hexagon
So....looking back at how I created this shape. I drew the initial Hexagon shape then extruded it to the current shape. I'm finding that I can't assign seperate colors or textures to each face of the object. Is this because it was extruded?
No matter how it was created, in order to apply a texture it need to be UV mapped, as the UV is setting how to map the texture on the object.
how do you do that with Hexigon or DAZ?
You can't UV unwrap in Daz Studio.
I don't know Hexagon, but found this on the web
There might be others / better...
It is the later part of the video, where he adds seams. You have to imagine that you want to add seams so you more or less can lay your model flat on a piece of paper.
I'll look at it and try it out. Thanks.
You can use a "Iray Decal Node" and project the image. (Iray Decals do not require UV. They can be set to "Object " or "World" co-ordinate system.)
In the "Shader Mixer", there is also the ability to add "Coordinate Projection", which can be used to project image without UV needed.
