Did PW Toon stop working after DS ver. 4.12

I was attmping to use PW Toon  in DS ver. 4.16 and only got a character that rendered solid white no mater which PW Toon preset I tried. I applied the prestets in DS ver 4.12 and all worked as it is supposed to and yes I did rnder in 3DLight in both versions. Anybody have any idea why?

I don't think I even owned pwToon until after 4.12, and it's always worked fine for me.

Hmm,  I wonder what I could be doing diferently in 4.16. I was able to simply apply the PW toon shader directly to Toon Generation 4  and then add a PW Toon preset DS ver.12 but in 4.16 I cannot get any change in surfaces when applying PW Toon

I do not recall what it did before, but you can apply the base shader or one of the presets if you select only one item in the scene and select it in the Surfaces tab. It only seems to apply to the root of the selection, so if you have a figure with clothing, you can select the figure and apply the shader, but if you are showing "Selected and Fitted Items" in the Surfaces tab, you cannot apply it to any of the other items. Select each item in the scene tab, then you can apply it.

  • Are you attempting to use it on a newer generation ( 8, 8.1, or 9 ) ? This is just speculation at the moment, but there might be a problem with changing a PBR shader to something else. Maybe try an older generation and see if it works for that.

Yes, it works after 4.12. Try reinstalling the plugin. I encountered that same problem when I set up DS on a new computer and the re-install fixed it.

I've not found that to be a problem - The new shader parameters replace the old shader parameters. The worst that happens is, you have to adjust sliders and shuffle some maps around to get the desired look in the new shader. Not that it matters. I find maps are frequently assigned to the wrong channels and sliders almost always need adjustment. YMMV.

Make sure your render engine is set to 3DL and not on iRay or another render engine.

  • Try to reinstall, normally if a shader file is missing I thought it renders in a flat black, but it sounds like a shader file is misplaced.

Have you tried changing the shader of the surfaces to 3DL before applying the PW Toon shader?

OK I re-installed with DIM and attempted to install manually. The problem I encounter both ways is that when I select the surfaces of the characters and the select the character in the scene tab, when I click the PW Toon main script  absolutely nothing happens. None of the surface tabs change such as adding an ouline tab (or other various PW Toon tabs) But when I click on one of the PW Toon presets such as technical drawing the surface texture is removed but still no PW Toon tabs are added.

PwToon works just fine in the lastest version of D|S.

It also works just fine with Genesis 8 and 9.

Installing with DIM is all you need. No need to change render engine (yet) to apply the shader.

After you attempt to apply the shader to a single figure, does the Surfaces tab show "Shader: pwToon (RSL)" at the top?

A number of properties are unique to the pwToon surface. Do any of them appear?

Well, I tried it on two seperate computers I have a copy of the same "My Library" on both systems I was abble run PW Toon  DS 4.12 on the new computer same as I did on the older computer but I get the same issues on both computers when I try to use PW Toon with DS 4.16

  • If you have 4.12 and 4.16 both installed on the same computer, that really makes me think that the pwToon.sdl file is not installed on the 4.16 installation. Can you check in the folder where the 4.16 version is installed and in the shaders folder see if the SDL file is there?

I don't know if I was on 4.15 or 4.16 before this, but it was working for me before and it is working for me in 4.21 now.
