Studio 4.21 - 99% system RAM usage and total freeze during Render
Hello,
Since I updated to 4.21 public 64bit, Studio freezes during the first stages of a render, usually during the line after "compiling shaders (0/x)".
I´ve investigated a bit what is going on. The bad thing is, it freezes so fast, Studio is not even able to write the log. When I have the tast manager open, the system RAM usage rapidly climbs to 99%, although the assigned amount of Memory is only about 5 gig - so more like 40% instead of 99%, but 99% is what is shown in the tast manager. At that point, the mouse pointer freezes and I have to do a hard reset. I tried waiting for up to 3 hours, but nothing, the system is solid frozen. The freeze happens so fast, even if I can spot the rise to 98% RAM load, I am not able to kill Studio in the Task Manager.
Oddly, I am able to do Iray preview with no issues, even with Gorilla 8´s or similar visible strand based hair.
It doesn´t matter if I have CPU fallback enabled or disabled, if Post Denoiser is enabled or not, if thread affinity is checked or not, if there is a set cpu load limit, if I use Iray Skin or PBR..... I just cannot figure it out. I read about the .tif issues and made sure there were none in my scenes, doesn´t matter. On the next render there were .tif´s included (Jade´s skin detail Normal)
I tried lowering the process priority and assigned CPU Cores inside Task Manager - no effect.
There ARE renders that I can do successfully, even rather complex ones with multiple people/animals including dforce Fur, Background props, Emissive surfaces, basic lights, etc.
To make it very clear, even Renders that I was able to do successfully with the older Studio version, even back then when I only had the 1080 gpu, now freeze my system 90% of the time.
System:
Gigabyte Z370 HD3
i5-8600
16 gb RAM
MSI GeForce RTX 3060 gaming x 12gb
Windows 10 64bit build 19044
nVidia Studio Driver 527.56 (2022-08-12)
Can someone help?

16GB's of RAM just isn't enough for the latest versions of DS, using fairly recent assets. 32GB's should be considered the minimum.
What exaclty do you mean by latest versionS (plural)? I kept DS always quite up to date, and had no issues up until I updated to the latest version. I even upgraded my Graphics Card from 1080 to 3060 after I installed the update and those issues began. I cannot guarantee 100% that I had the exact previous version before 4.21 running, but whatever version I had then, It just worked fine within the limitations of the 1080.
And it´s not every Render. I just popped in a G8.1 with 4k textures, some dforce hair, a dog 8 with dforce fur and gorilla 8 with dforce fur and upped the render SubD Levels of those three figures to 4, then used the basic environment lighting, an emissive backlight and one of Studios own spotlights. It was a bit heavy to start with, but once I had Iteration 1, it went smoothly to 1500 iterations in 6 Minutes, including Post Denoiser with Start Iteration 1000 and Blur.
Then, I have Scenes with one Character with clothing at SubD 3, 2 Geografts, short non-dforce hair, a bit of furniture and 4 Lightsources - freeze.
I can see that my 16 gb are a bit outdated and I am planning to increase RAM, but I have the feeling that those issues will still be present then.
Where do you get the "the assigned amount of Memory is only about 5 gig" if Task Manager is showing 99% (=Everything used and using drive space to compensate) at the same time?
From the Task Manager, too. In the "Daz Studio Application" line, it lists the value of used ram under Memory. And when it climbs to 99%, it is never above a value of 8 gig.
It doesn't matter, how many gigabytes DS is using, as DS is not the only program using your RAM - When the total usage of RAM exceeds the amount of installed RAM (real physical memory sticks), your computer starts using virtual memory (ie. your drive) to extend the available memory, and that is when your computer starts being sluggish because the drive is so much slower that RAM.
Yeah, I see that. Just ordered more of the delicious RAM, should be here in 2 days. Fingers crossed you are on the right track. ;)
I'm running 128GB of system RAM.
I've seen complex scenes with 5 G8 characters take over 60GB when I click the Render button.
I even had one scene that consumed 92GB, my personal record so far.
Most of it was hair :)
Yeah, I know 100 tricks to lower that.
No I don't want to.
I want to create with reckless abandon.
My next render computer build will most likely be a server board with 256GB and at least 2 HEDT CPU sockets.
This. Thx for pointing me to the right decision. I upgraded to 48gb RAM and have no issues now.
I have 16 GB system RAM plus 6 GB nVidia GeForce GTX 9x Series (GDDR5 Dedicated RAM) plus 128(!) MB Intel HD on-baord graphic card. DAZ Sutido Pro is using nVidia GPU processor. And the processor is Intel i7x Series (4 cores, 8 thr.). System hard drive is 250 GB SSD plus 1 TB 2nd drive (DAZ is installed on system drive). And, last but not least, operating system is Windows 8.1.
I have very rare high RAM usage when DAZ is rendering in Iray. DAZ settings are at maximum (like textures, pixel). And I use UHD 4K resolution in render settings. When I look in Task Manager I see that there is enough RAM left (~4 GB (nVidia and virtual system RAM)). Do I also need mroe (system) RAM? If so, I can not because I have laptop.
