Since the forum's 'search' options is so basic, I have to ask this question because searching for it is useless.
How do you turn off shadows so one side of the object/face won't have a shadow?

In Iray you can't literally turn off shadows (though I am not clear whether you mean cast shadows, from one object onto a surface, or the shading according to light position on an object).
Sorry, I should have mentioned the shadow is on the figure is belongs to the figure, like the second part you mentioned. I know you can turn off ground shadow but I don't remember how to do that. That may be the only thing I need to do. The shadow is whatever the program puts in when you're working on a scene and have not included a light source like a pinpoint light or spot light.
Turning of draw Ground in the Environment properties in Render Setings will remove ground shadows in Iray - you need an Environment Settings node to do that, which will be added when you do an Iray preview or render or can be added from the Create menu.
remove all lights and take preview from "Camera" where you can set the camera mode of HEADLAMP to "Auto" or "ON" and 'OFF'
on "ON", you can manualy the "Headlamp intensity"
