3DConnexion 3D Mice no longer supported by DAZ Studio

WandWWandW Posts: 2,845

Hi Gang,

I have long used a 3D Connection Space Pilot in Poser and DS to maneuver through scenes; I can't imagine using 3D software without one.

I recently filed a support ticket because the 3D mouse would pan the orthogonal cameras, which obviously isn't supposed to happen, although it works well otherwise.  I was told that versions of Studio after 4.12 no longer support 3DConnexion mice, and they did not even have one to test with, and I should reach out to the Forum for tips.

He filed a feature request for me, but if you use a 3DConnexion 3D Mouse, I urge you to file a feature request ticket so perhaps formal support can be restored for this valuable device.

Has always worked fine for me. Did you mean orthogonal cameras being rotated instead of just panned? Because this has always been the case. For that edge case just use the icons.

If this ever stops working in Daz Studio I will make a ruckus of epic proportions because I cannot possibly live without it. Not with the terrible (IMO) viewport navigation we have in there.

By panning I mean rotation. Orthogonal cameras should translate and zoom, but not rotate. I use orthogonal cameras quite a bit in Poser.

If 3D mouse support is valuable to you, submit a feature request ticket....

P.S; I own Faye and Lyra, and they are great characters! smiley

Thanks! As for a feature request, it works fine for me as is? I don't understand why it doesn't work for you, nor why support would give you a weird answer like that. It has always worked and it's still works.Have you made sure the plugin is loaded? It's called simply "3D Connexion".

FYI, I filed a ticket for the same issue last February with the same response. I think we will need a 3rd party developer to create a plugin if we want any improvements or fixes.

So it does work for you guys, just the orthogonal camera thing bothering you? Yeah I don't care about that. If I want to pan or whatever it's called (to me it feels like panning) then I just use the icon. I barely ever use orthogonal views anyway. Honestly I'd rather they don't touch anything as long it works the way it is. Don't wanna risk anything breaking :)

The feature request would be for 3DConnexion mice to be officially supported again, as Support stated that they were no longer supported...

I'm using it right now. They provide a plugin that comes with Daz Studio. How is it not officially supported? If they ever drop support, as in it doesn't work anymore, I'm going to be all over them. Until then it's just inconsequential words that someone from support gave you, probably to make it very clear that your requested feature is not going to get implemented. It changes nothing. I don't go to the doctor to get treated for back pain which I don't have yet :)

Officially supported means addressing issues if found, making it work if an update changes the requirements etc. Not having official support doesn't necessarily imply that it will immediately stop working, certainly not for all users.

So I should be more worried? Why would they decide not to officially support that anymore then? I mean, it exists. The already made it. Let's say Daz Studio 5 comes around with new plugin requirements. Does that mean this plugin is not going to be ported? Seems like a waste to just throw away all the effort.

If DAZ knows a significant number of people are using the 3d mouse, they will be less likely eliminate support.  It only takes a minute to let them know it is important to one's workflow  via a feature request.

As an aside, one can make orthogonal cameras by pointing cameras along the desired axes, and in each camera's settings, locking the rotations and turning off perspective.  These do work as expected with the 3DConnexion mouse...

That should also help in navigating scenes without rotating along the wrong axis, if i don't want to use the 3dconnexion utility all the time, just to confine the axes. Using the space mouse.
