I'd like to be able to make 3d scenes in DAZ Studio and put a 3d camera in the middle of them, switch lens distortion to spherical, and let it run, and then open up another scene, pop in the image into the environment tab, and done!
Is it that simple?

Have you tried? It isn't as if you can break anything :) I have done it but it was so long ago I can't remember what I did but the spherical camera sounds right.
Also make sure you render to canvases. I recommend rendering to the Beauty canvas. This produces an EXR file format. You may need to correct the exposure in an application that can open EXR like Affinity Photo or any other bitmap editing tool that supports EXR.
If Jay Versluis (The WP Guru) makes a video on a Daz Studio topic that I want to know more about, I'm sure to watch it. As part of Daz3D's In the Studio project with Jay, he streamed the session Creating and Working With Your Own HDRIs last November. It's available on the DAZ 3D channel at YouTube: . The entire session is more than two hours but the YouTube page has chapter points hyperlinks so you can jump to various parts easily.
Here ya go, simple 10-minute video tutorial with no bells and whistles. Just the information you need to make an HDRI with DAZ and a photo editor (GIMP, Photoshop etc).
Thank you all for the comments, I managed to get quite workable results from all this!
What program did you use?
With free software the mission is almost impossible, I think. A user suggested Bracket in another thread, but it is for making HDR images, not HDRIs, and even if it is possible to use it to create HDRIs, the final result looks pretty bad in my experience.
