Manually moving a scene's global/world coordinates?

I'm working on a project that involves a very large set.  Lots of walls, stairs, lights, etc.  Some of the components are parented to other parts.
The problem I'm having is that when I add some characters (or try to pose them with a preset pose), they appear or reappear on the 0,0,0 axis, which happens to be very far away from the center of the main set.
So every time I add a character or pose, I have move the characters back to where I want them.  And the project calls for a lot of different poses, which gets annoying and time consuming every time I have to move them.
I also tried to move the center of the set to the 0,0,0 axis (center of the world)  but the way the set pieces are connected and parented, it just all comes apart and the set peices are scattered (out of alignment) all over the place.

So I was wondering if there is a way to readjust the world coordinates to make the center of the world be at the center of the set?
Thanks for any help or advice!

I have a few "environment scenes" that are like this. Huge, multiple item scenes and...trying to move the -entire- thing is a pain. Some items are parented to some other item but not all parented to say an invisible ball, so that everything could be turned or moved.
I know I have gone in to a few of the bigger ones, took the time to parent everything to a "flat plane* so I could turn, move etc the -entire- scene. But it does take some time on the more intricate scenes with loads of say lamp posts or tree+buildings+streets(or say rocks)+bridges or balconies,+signs, etc

You could add the whole set to a group and move the group around.

    Select items for set.

    Create>New Group

Parent Selected items to New Group.

When parented to a group the items in the set retain their relevant position.

That means you can move the group around and the items in the group stay in their intended location.

    But, there's always a but.

Once parented to the group, trying to move the individual items will become problematic.

So have every thing where you want it first.

Adding new items to the New Group will change their location. You'll need to fix this manually.

Unparenting an item from the group resets it location.

Grouped cameras will translate relevant to the center of the group.SO pointing them is difficult.

That said, I use this method in nearly all my scenes.

The group can have things like veiwport visibility , the little eye icon next to the item in the Scene pane, set for every group member with 1 click.

As well as the little X or check mark (the arrow next to the item in the scene pane toggles this) mark that makes them unselectable in the viewport. So you can click things behind them.

Groups are very useful for large busy sets when used wisely.

  • Thanks for the suggestions.  Unfortunately I had no luck with trying to move the set.  Something about how the parts were parented.
But I did find a simple workaround.   The two figures that require multiple poses were resetting to 0,0,0 when I applied a pose.  But after parenting them to an object they are standing near, the figures now stay in place after posing them. (or at least appear in the general area where I need them)

The pose problem is easily solved. When you apply a pose to a figure, hold the CTRL key down when you apply the pose. You'll get a dialogue box which allows you to specify which of the translations/rotations etc you want to apply or not. Just uncheck the translation options and your figure will remain in place.

My bad... that should be CTRL, not Alt

(Edited by mod to fix quote)
