Raised Floors in Closets

OK, real life question here.

I was helping someone move, and every closet (including the kitchen) had raised floors. About an inch and a half or two, they look like they were built as part of the house. The house was probably built in the sixties, this is South Texas.

Why raise the closet floors? The owner has no idea. Sorry, no picture.

maybe in case of water leak or flooding. You would have the extra clearance before stuff started getting wet. i am not carpenter but that would be my guess.

Fear of flooding? Truth is I've never heard of that in my life!

Maybe to hide all the secret passages?
