Does anyone know what the last version of Daz was before they borked the parent function?

Like the title says, trying to find which version of Daz was the most recent before they messed up the parent function.

Between the parent function no longer working correctly and the annoying unpreventable pop-up every time you try to zero something now, it's getting harder and harder to work in Daz angry

Thank you for any one who knows.

  • What is wrong with parenting? Are you sure it isn't just a matter of having Parent In Place off (or on)? Without more information it is hard to guess what issue you are seeing, but I am not aware of anything having changed with respect to parenting.

Also unless you have an older version of DS saved, you are stuck with the current one since they don't offer download options for older versions.

FSMCDesigns - It's been mentioned before that this is because Daz don't have the staff to deal with anything other than the latest release.

Why would they need staff to deal with older versions? All they have to do is keep the old installlers on their server where people can download them. You only get support for the latest version.

My issue is that with the recent versions of Daz (at least 4.21), if I position an object and parent it to another object or bone it goes flying across the screen. If I group objects together and then unparent them from the group, they again going flying across the screen. This wasn't the case in earlier versions for the past several years.

I think I'm okay as I found a 4.20 beta that still has parenting working as it should, so I'll just go back to that.

Which is why I never overwrite any existing installs of Daz. I do a manual download and install it to its own directory. Daz doesn't care what directory it's run from.

I think they're trying encorage users to move onto the newest DS version. By not having access to the older versions and removing support for them is a way of doing that. Albeit I agree that pre-existing versions should be available even if support for them has ended.

Change the status of "Parent in place"

  • Yep, when 'Parent In Place' is set to on, stuff doesn't fly about. You need to be able to set the checkbox once by using a right click menu to select the "Change ... Parent" menu option and a window pops up where it can be set. If instead you change the parent by dragging items in the scene tree, then you won't get to see the popup window, but the setting will apply anyway.

    Richard

Thanks, can someone screenshot for me where we turn this on/off?

Weird that they they defaulted to turn this off after so many years of it defaulted to be turned on :|

It's also in the Scene pane option menu - the lined/hmaburger button or right-click the tab. It's sticky so perhaps you had turned it off (deliberately or in error) on a particular occasion - it certainly didn't turn itself off for me.

For me it's version specific. For example I have a 4.16 and 4.21 pro release. 4.16 parent in place is still "on", 4.21 it is not. Which is why I made the assumption it was attached to a version.

I think the settings can be changed by the parented props, figures and sets you load depending on how you interact with them

I still haven't found a solution to exporting things not parented in place (or even worse a mix of parented in place and not) as obj or FBX without them exploding

(or using scripts on them like instancify, Alienator etc)

DS remembers the last setting used with "Parent in Place" and uses it automatically the next time, unless told otherwise.

There has been times I have taken the check off of it for something and forgot to put it back, forgetting that I took it off...  Takes a while before I remember, what I forgot blush

The different release channels have separate settings - so having the two be independent is the expected and intended behaviour.
