  • Tobor,

Thank you so much for your help and guidence here.  I think that is what I was missing, using 'emissive' vs well most of the stuff saying set it to base shader.  I spent most of the evening getting Nvidea back into my computer so renders didn't take nearly as much time.  (yes I just went and dropped a new graphics card into my computer.  (GTX970))

Good news vs. cpu as I am playing inital benchmarks are about 10x faster!!!

Bad news, 10x faster is still slower then I want it to run cause of all the new informtaiton I'm learning hear.  Other good news, While this thread is becoming a kinda almost blog like post, I am hoping someone comes along new to this as I am and learns something from my 'hacking' though it...

Drop a second GTX 970 into the machine. Don't enable SLI.

For the non-hobbyists I'm sure the cloud rendering farms that are poised to enter the market will help speed up renders. Even at $3-4 per GPU hour, it'll be worth it to me. Most of my scenes will render on a VCA in about 2 minutes, as opposed to over an hour. Unfortunately, ther's no info on the cloud option included in D|S, and most of the services out there are fairly obtuse to set up. Will Amazon's rendering services work with Iray under D|S? Who knows. Daz isn't saying anything.

I'm currently using a system with a Xeon dual processor, and two very modest nVidia cards, with a total of just under 500 cores. I'm trying to be very good this year so that Santa will bring me a nice card with a few thousand cores.

Older machine, only one graphics card slot, or I'd have bought dual 980's the other day :)  This machine is due for upgrade next year, and will put a 980 or equivilent in with a 970.

Great thread.  Roger Hardy has some really good info!

  • Glad it has helped RAMWolff, I'll be updating shortly on new adventures :)
