Pressure in photoshop

so, i made a spiral path in Photoshop. i want the stroke to gradually get bigger as it goes along. Simulate pressure only does it halfway, then tapers back down.

Any PSers know how to solve this?

  • Unless it has changed recently, I believe simulate pressure doesn't give controls to adjust the taper, it has a built in curve with tapering at both ends. A solution could be doubling the length of the path (the remaining part shouldn't need to curve for this to work), and then once you have the spiral you want you can hide or remove the rest of the line. That may not be as effective if you need to keep this as a vector path. Or, if this has changed someone else may know an easier solution!
  • You might want to take a look at a neat little add on called Lazy Nezumi Pro. It's got all sorts of handy rulers and line adjustment tools. It also can do spirals with variable taper and pressure controls. I haven't played with those functions myself as I mainly use the elipse rulers. But there is a free trial, and for what you get the cost of a license is very reasonable.

On the upper right corner of the main website there is a big green Download button. Above that it says "Try it Free for 15 days".  Lazy Nezumi Pro - Mouse and Pen Smoothing for Photoshop and other Apps.   Run the Installer and launch it. If you don't have a license it'll run in demo mode. You also don't have to tie it into Photoshop. It can run independently so it doesn't  automatically load when PS loads. When I need it I just click on the dektop icon and it pops up. I do what I need and then close it out. Tying  it directly to PS makes PS  2023 run sluggishly- at least for me

If you click on "Info" at the top you can download the documentation. There's also several tutorials on the site.

I'll try to figure it out and post some screen shots but it might take me a few dayssmiley

OK, I had an appointment cancel so I had a little extra time today. Hope this helps!

First of all, if you’re using a Wacom tablet make sure you have Windows Ink turned on. Otherwise, pressure will not work in Photoshop. I expect the same will be true for other tablets. ( image #1)

Image #2 is a spiral I got using the default spiral ruler settings.

I’m using PS 2023 on a Wacom Cintiq 22. I’ve been using Lazy Nezumi Pro for about 4 years now without problems. The plug in is advertised as being able to work with any art app so I expect it would work for older versions. I just don’t pair it automatically with PS because it makes PS a little laggy on my system.

Image # 3 is a screen grab of the default spiral ruler settings. Lots of options here for even more pressure and line settings!
