A Shopping Story

If you were to look at the history of my posts, you'd find I've been pretty bullish on Daz's store site and their policies. I tried shopping at Rendo a few years ago, and their site was so terribly awful to use, I quit going there. I still get email offers from them--I don't know why I never unsubscribed--but I always just delete their emails. Believe me, I'm writing this as a fan of Daz.

So a I got an interesting email offer from Daz about 50% off on a bunch of stuff. The best savings came if you bought one of that day's new products, and I actually found one of the new items I thought might be good. I wanted to see if anything among the sale items appealed to me.

I do my shopping on an iPhone, so to get to the store I just tapped on the offer email.

  1. After all these years, Keep Me Signed In still doesn't work, so I had to log in angry
  2. After login, the page doesn't reload, so I had to do that manually. Then a pop-up window about "starting your 3D adventure" got in my way angry, as if I weren't an existing customer.
  3. Then the buttons on the offer screen didn't work. Tapping on them brought up my keyboard as if I were activating a text field angry
  4. I reloaded the page again, and this time the buttons worked and I could add one of the new products to my cart.
  5. Then I went to see the items that were 50% off, and the site forgot again angry that I want to see All items per page, not just a handful so I can scroll on down instead of waiting for more page reloads.
  6. At this point I decided that my excitement over the offer wasn't enough for me to continue struggling at that time with the site.
  7. Later in the day I got an email letting me know I forgot something in my shopping cart. Do you think I was ready to start that mess again?

My guess is that the non-functional buttons were probably a transient issue caused by some bloated framework that didn't reload properly after I had to sign in because Keep Me Signed in doesn't work.

Do other iPhone users experience so much friction when trying to shop at Daz? Does Keep Me Signed in actually work for others? I'm wondering if the store is expected to work better and I just have a cookie problem or something.

These frustrations are small, but stuff like this happens every dang time, and it makes me feel like sometimes it not worth the effort to investigate a Daz offer. It seems like you wouldn't want your customers to feel like they have to work up enough energy to go into battle with your store site in order to give you money...

Daz, at the very least, could the items-per-page setting be stored in a user's account preferences so the site won't forget it?

  • +1 everything you have posted.

I quit trying to look at the store on my iPhone, seriously it's just too hard flipping pages 1 or 58 pages, got to page 2 now it says (2 of 65), uh, what?!  All that you have posted, getting logged out, popups, not showing correct store page, get logged out, relogged in auto but refresh starts at page 1 now, and I was 15 pages in, walk away.

I do all my purchases on iPad.  even then icons missing, store or forum, logout and in refresh frustration, search on working or gigving really odd results.  promo shots that look great but provide no details (no shots of back of textures), clothing with no material zone shots to see how I MYSELF can texture the outfit, the whole expereince is frustrating - and I just don't spend my money at Daz3d any more.

iPhone shopping wacked, iPad better expereince but still, on PC or Mac store is bit better but all th other stuff , missing icons, popup banners, auto refresh are still present.

Yeah, I have this feeling that DAZ who wants us to constantly keep checking on the store (why else would you have all sorts of incentives like flash sales and whatnot) for sales and reasons to spend money, thinks everyone who shops here is either tethered to a desktop or they carry one around with a really long extension cord all day long.

    You'd think that.

Considering that roughly 63% of internet traffic comes from smartphones (like the iPhone I'm using now) you'd think that there'd be better functionality.

Then again DAZ is actually better than some big sites like Home Depot, but that's like saying being bitten by a lynx is better than being bitten by a bobcat... it stills isn't fun either way.

I hardly ever shop on my iPhone due to past annoyances and problems and nothing has ever really been that important that I couldn't wait to get home... I mostly use my iPad for purchases, which is marginally better but generally at least less frustrating and better formatted.

Incidentally a perfect example of how terrible the DAZ works on my iPhone is that when I clicked on the orange "Stellar Deal" banner, most of it is inaccessible in that you can't scroll it or read most of it because it's too big or not oriented probably... in either landscape or portrait mode... So I have no idea what the sale banner is offering.

    Brilliant.

I love it here, for all the reasons you guys mentioned. My particular favourite is the product search function which reportedly has been in the process of updating for several months, yet I still cannot find some products when I use their exact names. Evidently, these policies have been so successful that they have now been extended to the Customer Sales Support division, which previously was an outlier.

With regards to Keep Me Signed In, I notice that it seems to keep me signed in on the particular device to which I signed in, be it desktop/laptop, phone, as long as I use that item to access daz without logging in on something else. Once I sign in on another device, then the Keep Me Signed In is off on the last device.

...nothing to worry about, pretty much just more pricey G9 bundles and another "buy in" sale.

Daz puts so much effort into making an interesting offer every day.

Surely they want that effort to pay off by allowing people to buy instantly, wherever they are.

To achieve that, the shopping site should work extremely well on Android and iOS phones. Today it works, but only if the user is willing to struggle against it. That's not good.

Regarding the 'Keep me signed-in' issue. DAZ has nothing on Xfinity. They are leap years ahead of them since Xfinity 'upgraded' their website. What took me one click, now is a fight of seven to ten clicks to get to the previously saved page. So yeah, DAZ you have my vote on signing in.

But I won't go near anyone's site on my iPhone. I think Apple is to blame there.

I don't visit the site on my Android. Unless I'm on a Wifi network every page on the site takes forever to load.

And it's just Daz, too -- most of the other sites I visit load fine.

Which is OK by me. I already spend enough money while visiting the site on my days off. I don't need to be spending the money I'm trying to make, while I'm on lunch hour at work. :D
