Last two content updates deleted my Smart Content

Win7 Home & latest versions of both Daz Studio (4.8) and whatever the latest version is of the Install Manager. There are NO CHANGES to my hard drive, nor is this a custom instal to unusual directories. Everything was working fine before, and now it is not.

Twice now, I have purchased content, downloaded and installed it, and my Smart Content Pane has lost track of my content.

  • Both times, the categories and product names were there, but the thumbnails were missing.
  • Both times, I manually stopped and restarted the Content Management process. That did not resolve the issue.
  • Both times, I rebooted the computer. That did not resolve the issue.
    • The first time, I performed database maintenance and reset the database and reimported the metadata. That fixed the problem.
    • The second time, I performed database maintenance and reset the database and reimported the metadata. This messed it up even more. Now, there are no categories and no thumbnails.

If someone wants the logs, I can send them (remind me where they are, though) tonight.

Needless to say, this is VERY frustrating. I prefer the Smart Content pane over the Content Library and don't want to have to switch back to it (it feels like I'm taking a huge step backwards in regards to technology). But I must admit, the unstability of the Smart Content pane is one of my major frustrations with Daz Studio, and my frequent need to reset and reimport content is the primary reason I don't waste time customizing it to add older content (even though doing so would actually help my work flow).

    Two questions...

    1.  Which database service are you using...the Valentina one (the original one that Studio used) or the Postgre one (the newer one)?

    2.  What security/antivirus software are you running?

  • 1. Postgre.

    2. AVG Antivirus 2015.

Go to your task manager then processes and see if Content Management Services or Postgre is running

  • Make sure DS is not running before launching DIM to install, and vice-versa.

Simply go to your programs and turn on the service. That has happened to me before and that is the solution. I install all the time with DAZ open and DIM downloading and installing with no problem.

That could very well be the solution...except if something is blocking the service.  There are known problems with some AV/security products (namely ZoneAlarm/postgre and most others, at one time or another and Valentina)...that's why that is often a question in these type threads.  And Postgre is more robust and less likely to corrupt when DS is open, Valentina absolutely HAD to have Studio shut down in order to reduce the chance of database corruption...if it was open, you were almost assured of ending up with a corrupt database.

  • frank0314: Thank you. That was good advice. I had started and stopped the service before, but had not actually checked Device Manager to see if it was running. It was, so unfortunately that did not resolve my issue.

I have moved this to another thread: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/62373/what-is-the-path-and-file-name-s-of-the-database#latest

  • mjc1016: Thanks for reminding me to keep Daz Studio off while I'm installing. It actually was off when I ran the Install Manager, so that's not the culprit. And I don't think anything is blocking the service. I think the Db is corrupt and needs to be rebuilt (again).
