problems to render, the PC crash
Hi to everyone, since yesterday I suddenly can't render on Daz Studio anymore. I'm using Daz 4.21.0.5 and Daz 4.21.1.48 on Windows 10 and I have the problem with both versions. I composed a scene with 8 characters and when I render, the PC freezes and the cursor also freezes, with no error messages at all, so I have to restart the computer. I've tried decreasing the number of characters in the scene down to only 5 at once, but I'm having the same problem, everything freezes.
When I send the render, appears the window where the rendered scene should appear, but it remains empty and the PC crashes. 2 days ago the same scene with only 5 characters rendered fine, now not anymore. Taking the individual characters and the location, they render smoothly. I tried to render even a scene of only 600x500 pixels with 8 characters, but the PC freezes as usual. My PC mounts 2x Nvidia Geforce GTX 980. Someone could help, please?

What are your other system specifications? I would suspect you are rrunning out of system memory, though eight distinct figures is likely to be more than the GPUs can handle anyway (I'm surprised five would fit).
Most likely you ran out of VRAM of two GTX 980s, and you did not check the option 'Allow CPU Fallback’, so the rendering was doomed. Such a freeez or crash frequently happens to GTX 9xx / GTX 10xx.
Suggest you:
- install GPU-Z. Open it to observe the VRAM used / GPU load when testing.
- Open DS only, tick 'Allow CPU Fallback’ and restart DS.
- First use 3 - 4 figures to test while checking the status in GPU-Z. Then add one or two figures for further test...
- Use Scene Optimizer to dwindle the VRAM consumption of your scene, if you really wanna have 8 figures in there but rendering with GPU always fails。。。
Running out of VRAM when CPU fallback is not allowed, results in black render.
I'm with Richard on this, the OP is most likely running out of system RAM - That is known to cause the described symptoms.
As far as I know from nearly all of my testers, 'Black Render' mostly happens to RTX 20xx + cards, while freeze and crash frequently happen to GTX 9xx / GTX 10xx ~ under the similar circumstances...
Besides, the OP used to succeed in rendering 'that scene', that's why he need to further test and observe the VRAM used and RAM used by using GPU-Z. That'll be much clearer what the 'issues' are...
@ale.bersanetti pls post the Ds log if possible, we may further check to find out what was going wrong..
Thanks for your answers, attached you find my hardware setup. However, until two days ago I was able to render with 5 characters in the same location, now the PC freezes as soon as I try to render the same file. Is it possible there is some problem with the Nvidia drivers?
Even if you updated your Nvidia driver, it's still hard to tell... we have to check your DS log file first of all... even Windows' dump file...
BTW, personally not suggest tick CPU in your case ~ then you have to make sure by testing if the scene was rendered with GPUs or CPU on earth.... Check your log file as well.
You didn't give details of your hardware (amount of system RAM)
The last time you successfully rendered 5 characters, were they the same characters, wearing the same clothes and hair?
i've 16gb ram installed, about the characters, it was the same composition file .duf. After successful render with 5 characters, i increased the number in 8 saving a new .duf. After the problem of crashing with 8 characters, i tryed again with the old .duf with 5 characters and it gave me the same crash. With only one GTX 980, last year i rendered a composition with 9 characters in a very complex location, but since 2 days ago, i'm not able to render the same files anymore.
I opened log file, but i don't know what to check.
So post the log as the attachment in here...
It would help us if you attached your log to your post with "Attach a file" above "Post Comment" button.
You can get to your log in DS with Help->Troubleshoot->View Log File. Save the log to your desktop where it's easy to find.
With 16GB's RAM and even 5 characters (with clothing and hair) and whatever you have in the scene, you are running out of RAM, making Windows use virtual memory (disk space) to compensate. Maybe there is not enough disk space left, something has changed in virtual memory settings or possibly the space for virtual memory has become too fragmented - DS doesn't like using virtual memory, but if the phase of the moon is right, it does still work with it.
Here is my log, please let me know how to check for issues.
Check from the line 11806... while the iray engine started to process your scene on grphics cards and CPU (you ticked CPU), your system freezed. It might result from the lack of VRAM / RAM or CPU problem when the engine started using Embree on it.
You may check the Windows dump file to see what caused system crash on earth.
Still, suggest you first uncheck CPU in Devices list and try again...
Besides, there're 1.8K texture maps (line 11771)in your scene, you better use Scene Optimizer to downsize those big maps at least (4K) otherwise you GPUs have no way to hold them all...
So, when you open DS, you have just 9 to 11GB's RAM left, you still have CPU also checked as rendering device (bad idea).
I do not understand, how have you ever rendered a scene with five G8 characters with clothing and hair on this system - How long did it take to render the scene?
A couple of years ago, when I was still using the previous GPU (RTX 2070 Super with 8GB's of VRAM), I used four G8 characters with textures, clothing and hair that were very light on the system, and the scene still used 20GB's of RAM when loaded into DS and 32GB's of RAM when DS was rendering the scene on GPU, if the rendering would have been done on CPU, the RAM usage would have even been higher.
As I don't know, how your virtual memory is setup, it is quite possible that you are running out of both the RAM and virtual memory, in which case I'm surpriced if you computer didn't just crash completely.
If you load just one character (naked and without hair) without anything else in the scene, does it render? show us the log if it does.
I also wonder how...
Now, suggest you refer to this link: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-open-and-analyze-dump-error-files-windows-10, use WinDbg to check the minidump files. The analysis may tell you what caused you system freeze and crash...
Just now, I 'made' GPU-Z bring me a crash. I checked the dump file and it showed me the reason and clues... like this:
PerttiA and Crosswind, thanks again for your precious suppert, next time i'll follow your suggestions about checking dumpfile and i'll try to uncheck CPU. Anyway, i've made 5 render succesfully from yesterday, they takes long time, about 5 hours each, but now it seems to works fine. Here attachde you find the render that gave me a lot of problem and now render, slowly, but perfect with 8 G8 characters (the eighth is inside the red cab)
Five hour rendertime says that your GPU's are not taking part in rendering, which would have been surpricing as they only have 4GB's of VRAM each and being non-RTX cards, they would additionally need to handle the emulation of RTX functions in software (base load in the VRAM around 5GB's with the emulation)
