Problems with intrusive red highlights

I recently worked on a contest image and was constantly having to change it because of serious blobs of red which I took to be reflections, although I have no idea why they were red when the lights weren't. I am experiencing the same problem again with a messing-about render, except that this time they are small spots (about ten pixels+/- square). Can anyone suggest the cause and more significantly the solution please?

Needless to say, now the particular gremlin is refusing to allow me to upload the image, despite pretending that it will.
Weird, now it will......
By the way, the white-edged box is an attempt to enlarge the problem.
If that is using the 3Delight render engine with the lights set to 'shadow maps'?
The answer is to set the lights to 'Raytraced' shadows instead.
Thanks. It will have been 3Delight I think, so I will explore that solution.
I will report back - hopefullt positively.
