Question about shaders

Are there any threads or tutorials anywhere that give simple tips on how to tweak shaders if they're too bright?  I have some metalic shaders I found at sharecg.  They look fantastic when applied to an object with a light on them but if they're in a shadowy or dark area they glow in the dark.  I typed "shader too bright" the Search Forums field at the top of the page but all I got back was a thread where someone was talking about their social security benifits.   There is a thread at the top of the forum list about shader tutorials but most of the links in it are dead and some of the topics discussed in there went over my head.

I need noob-level info.

If these are for 3Delight, then you will need to adjust the Ambient surface setting down...probably just go ahead and set it to zero.

Thanks for the info.  I created a terrace like platform bordered with ornate railing in Hexagon.  To save time I didn't unwrap and UV map the rails.  I simply applied a materal to them figuring that I could apply a shader to it and that would provide enough detail for a background object.  I ended up spending most of the week fiddling with the shader settings and didn't get an effect that I liked.  So I went back and UV mapped the rails and the accents attached to them.  I painted them in Hexagon and now have textures and a look that I'm satisfied with.    ...that ought to teach me to try and cut corners.

For the forum search, try ignoring it completely and just using Google, since that works better and lets you search for entire phrases rather than just single words.  For example to find this thread, you can google the following line:

    "shader too bright" daz

(you can actually limit the search to a single site, but I've given up trying to remember how and I can usually spot the DAZ site in the list right away anyway.  It's super-easy, if you can remember.)

Daz3d helps even better than just daz and  site:www.daz3d.com is the one to limit to this site.

I Googled first but the results that came back were all about iray and advertisments for shaders.  So I tried the forum search.  Keyra's suggestion may help improve a google search though.   Now that I recall I used to type that when I first starting using the program.    ....then I got lazy.  indecision
