What is this characteristic called Hierarchical?

I see this term used sometimes when describing some assets - hierarchical poses, or hierarchical materials, so on.  What does it mean, please ?

It means it will apply to a hieraci.

E.g a man on a bike. You will then usually have parented the figure to the bike, and when you apply a hieracical pose it will pose both the character and the bike.

A hieracical material preset can apply materials to a whole set of clothing at once, and not just an individual item.
