Tonal qualities lost in rendering

I have developed a skin that I absolutely love, and which looks really natural, but I have just been trying to render it with extremely disappointing results. The image shows the DS on the right and the render on the left. What am I doing wrong? I am viewing the screen in Preview Lights mode for the right image, so I don't get it. I imagine it is lighting, but what do I need to do? It is a 3Delight render.

  • What shader and render engine are you using? It may be environment lighting, especially in Iray with the defaults, but there's also probably some SSS contribution if you are using anything other than the default DAZ Shader. The preview is not going to be a good guide to the way things will look when rendered, especially using more advanced shaders, lights and render settings.

    Richard,

I'm not entirely sure I grasp the question. What shader should I be using? Isn't 3Delight the engine?

    Thanks

    Iray is now the default.

  • The Render Settings pane will tell you what engine you are using, the Surface pane with one of the texturesd surfaces selected will tell you which shader you are using (look at top-left).

I set the scene to 3Delight for render, so I am sure that was the engine. I think....

I have just found the IRay uberbase, but it has completely taken away the tonal qualities I had created, even in the DS. There must be some way to get that really natural look, surely?

Ahhh. It is looking better as I render a tester, but IRay is so slooooooow!

    Thanks, Richard

Iray isn't slow when done properly. Many scenes render in minutes. Complex scenes still render in an hour or two.

    depending on hardware...
