My late 2012 iMac has no GPU for iRay?

I've just learnt that there should be! My system says it has GTX 680MX as shown in the pix. But when I click advanced tab of iRay, there is nothing shown except CPU. Is there anything wrong here?

  • I believe there is software or a driver you need for a Mac that will make it work. Somebody else had that problem and that was the solution which is in a fairly recent post here.

What version of OS X are you on?

Driver updates from Nvida cards are bundled in OS X versions, not all OS updates included drivers for specific cards.

Unfortunately Apple does not allow Nvdia to make it's own drivers so your subject to get them from OS X updates and no other place.

You may also try downloading the Nvidia Cuda tool set for Mac, technically not drivers and not subject to Apples anal retentiveness.

The Nvidia Cuda tools are specific to the specific versions of OS X, use the correct version for your version.

You'll have to do this, as the Nvidia provided drivers are configured to only install on MacPro. And this tells you how to disable it when it goes horribly wrong.

I would not use this method Esemwy suggests. The GTX 680MX is a card that came as direct to customer option from Apple on that model iMac. The links you provide are for hacking the EFI (effectively the Mac BIOS) so it recognizes cards that were not included in the EFI tools to begin with. It's not needed for this card and it could cause serious an irreparable damage to the computer. The fact your Mac identifies the card already in the system configuration you posted is clearly showing you the EFI sees the card in your mac and knows all about it.

did the Cuda tool set work?

also not coming down on Emswy, I've posted potentially disastrous suggestions all over the web with all intentions of trying to help but not fully knowing the outcome.

Fortunately for me, it works, StratDragon! I don't know. But the latest version of CUDA from nVidia site works on my late 2012 machine. Thanks for your care!
