What is the easiest way to use a tiled texture on a figure with multiple surfaces, without having the texture break at the seams?

its not ever going to be easy. You either need to make your own UV map for the figure, or paint the texture in a 3D app.
This is my biggest frustration with using Carrara.
Carrara has some great UV mapping that ... doesn't work anywhere except Carrara (particularly various parametric shading)
