Not mine either since I don't use Apple products. Even if I did, there is no way I can justify the price of an Iphone

Its weird how DS isn't very iOS friendly, products like this use it exclusively.

Although I'm sure the DAZ app fills a niche for some DAZers...  But what is so special about iPhones, in general?  What makes them so expensive?  Gizmo addiction?

I've got a two generation old $100, G4, Android and am as happy as a pig in sh...(er, mud) with it but don't use half of the features.  How far will this trend go?  At what point does a phone end up looking like Marvel spaceship?frown

I assume you mean MacOS . . .  but, how do you figure that "DS isn't very iOS friendly"?

DAZ has spent a lot of time developing versions of DS specifically to run on MacOS and Apple silicone. DS currently runs on MacOS.

Also, IIRC, Apple still supported Nvidia drivers when Iray was introduced. Again, IIRC, it was several years later that Nvidia video cards were no longer supported by Apple.

I hesitate to leap into this because this is the sort of conversation that becomes fractious easily but...  we should deal with this specific case first.  The new software in the Daz store uses LIDAR for precise measurements of facial expression.  All of the iPhones of the last 5 years (short of the SE series) have built in LIDAR  and, importantly, the LIDAR works the same way with the same software pathway.  If you write an app that leverages Lidar, it works on every iPhone that has FaceID.  On the Android side, there are almost no Android phones with LIDAR with none released for 2023 and all of them use unique versions with no simple passthrough.  The creators could create an app which would work on IOS with FaceID and a limited subset of older Samsung phones but that would be as close as could be done practically.

To answer LeatherGryphon,  there are simple answers to some of his questions. What is so special about iPhones... I should begin by saying that I am an owner of both.  The first thing is consistency; Apple supports software updates on average for 6 years while Android users should expect  2 years on average.  The second is workflow; to do serious work, you need a seamless path to access something like the camera to get to video editing etc...  Here is a list of theatrical films shot on iPhones https://www.indiewire.com/features/general/movies-shot-on-iphones-unsane-tangerine-shorts-1201941565/ which take advantage of the professional grade tools.  The build quality is good so that if you don't drop your phone on concrete, you can have a phone that will see that 6 years of updates.  https://www.igeeksblog.com/why-iphone-has-better-resale-value-than-android/ What makes them so expensive...  Well, they are made of high quality materials, they have really long term software support, and probably most important, Apple never sells at a loss.  iPhones are a minority in the world but they represent the majority of profitable cell phones in the world.  As a user,  there is a benefit in knowing my cell phone producer will be there tomorrow; the Android world is littered with companies that could not substain selling phones as a loss leader... "I've got a two generation old $100, G4, Android and am as happy as a pig in sh...(er, mud) with it but don't use half of the features.".... I'm the sort of guy who uses all the features I paid for.  I have used my personal phone professionally for photography (my SLR and digital cameras sit on a shelf gathering dust) so having access to professional tools is useful for me especially when they are always in my pocket.  As I said, i have both iPhone and Android phone.  My Iphone is my camera, communication center, and most mobile computer while my Android phone is the house phone which is easily replacable, cheap, and has low demands put on it.

I have had both iPhones and Android but I have very limited requirements. My present Android phone cost me a fraction of the price of an iPhone and does everything I need it to do. It takes excellent photos and videos (I use Davinci Resolve to edit video) and all the apps I need work without a glitch. I used to be an Apple loyalist but those days are long gone since I retired and have a small, fixed pension.

As for this offering from DAZ - not interested even if I did have the phone with which to use it.

There is no application that one should buy a new phone for.   I have no need for this product since I don't do animation.  There are people who do  and this is an easy way to bring in mo-cap for a type of phone that is very common.  I glanced to see what is the cheapest phone that one could get that would run the app, get the IOS update that is coming in the fall, and was fully working and came up with $150 US so it shouldn't be too hard for find people who might find a use for this product.  I always have to remind myself that my tastes aren't everyones; I an find if there is never an upgraded CAT, child, baby etc. in the Daz store since I would never buy it.

I think you misunderstood, they do indeed mean iOS as the product in question is used on iPhones and Daz does not.

Now I'm confused!  The product in question is made by a vendor and not Daz3d.  The store has always had products that required very specific hardware as anyone with AMD graphics trying to use dForce can vouch for.  Here the product requires a Lidar scanner built into a smarphone which does limit it to a certain brand exactly the way that Dforce is limited to certain Nvdia products. This is not Daz3d supporting IOS or not supporting IOS but rather a vendor making a product for a certain sensor. If I can remember, there have been products that supported a very specfic  knob-like thing used for navigating 3d spaces called the 3d connexion space mouse.

other programs like Unreal Engine and it's Metahumans use the iOS ARkit and it's livelink too

it's sort of an Indie Industry standard

the pros use Faceware, Rokoko, Dynamixyz, not an iPhone in sight but pricey AF

My take on the whole iPhone thing is that this Apple gadget has the lion's share of the US market but Android is dominant in the rest of the world. DAZ is a very US centric company to the point where those of us in the wider world at large often feel ignored (at least I often do). Whether or not the first part of my theory is justified, I think the latter observation holds.

Hopefully, everyone is calm enough that there will not be any reason to delete the post.  There is data to examine in terms of your comment: https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/iphone-market-share-by-country so yes, in many countries, US, Canada, Britain, Australia, Japan, Denmark, Sweden, and a few other places, iPhone is king while Android rules Asia and the developing world.  There is a complication based on income so that if you are wealthy in Nigera, your chances of having an iPhone go way up.  I can feel your pain as a Mac user when I see the dreaded "Windows Only" mentioned for software.  In this case, it is the lack of Lidor that decides what device the software can use.

I think a lot of them have a store employee just put the phone in their hand and they never try anything different. Not all of them, but a lot of them.

I'm actually surprised by that market share map. I thought that iPhone was dominant in the USA and UK but not elsewhere. I live in New Zealand and most of the people I know have Android phones but your data suggests otherwise.

A few years ago I was totally Apple. I had an iPhone, iMac, Macbook and iPad. Now only the iPad is left. My switch to Windows was totally because of NVidia GPU and IRay. Not complaining though, I got a really good price for my 8 year old iMac.

Just chiming in here to say I have this and it works fantastic. Yes, I get it some folks don't like iPhones and such, but if you have an iPhone or an iPad, this will work wonderfully for you. I can't imagine animating without this for G9 or G8.

I just looked up iPhone penetration in New Zealand in 2023 and it is 46.34% IOS and 57.27% Android so it might depend on what social circles you are in.  People tend to hang around the people who do stuff the way they do (google green bubble/ blue bubble messaging);  I don't think I have ever seen a green bubble on my iPhone and can't say I know anyone who doesn't have an iPhone.  Ironically, I know two Apple engineers, and Apple Store manager, and my sister nearly became an Apple executive a while ago.

It really depends on what you want vs want vs what you can spend. I used to be an Android user but I switch to iPhone a couple of years back mainly for the end to end encryption. It's also the phone that my work (A Health care facility) supports. As far as cost goes again it depends on what you want. My husband is an avid Android fan and he really wanted the Fold so I got it for him. I decided to upgrade my iPhone to years ago to the 13 pro max with 1 TB of memory because it cost less then my husbands Fold

The topic is why the mocap tool is iOS only, not a geenral debate on Iphones vs Android with the attendant  risk of a platform war.
