Somewhat OT: Recommendations for webcams for PC mocap

SnowSultanSnowSultan Posts: 3,596

Hi. I'm thinking of purchasing a webcam for my PC (I do not currently have one) specifically for use with fairly simple motion capture for programs like Cartoon Animator, the hand posing tool in Clip Studio Paint, and *maybe* some 3D use if possible. Could anyone give any recommendations for cameras that would perform well or provide information about what resolutions or other technical details would be most useful in choosing a camera? Thank you very much.

Can't you use your phone?  I've heard of folks (VTubers) with phone mounts on their rig for motion capture.  Current phones have insane cameras and some of the newer iPhones have Lidar which would be neat if the software you mentioned support it.  Quick google and it looks like Cartoon Animator works with a phone camera https://www.reallusion.com/cartoon-animator/motion-capture-animation/download.html#gears-comparison.  IDK, maybe you just want a webcam.. my first reaction was.. to be cheap.  Sorry.

I probably can, and I know Cartoon Animator works with phone cameras, but from what I've read, the apps that send the video to your PC is often buggy and unreliable. Figured I'd just look into a real webcam and avoid that hassle. I might not after all though, as it didn't occur to me right away that facial animation can be done manually (and will need to be to fix mocap footage anyway), so I'll probably just experiment with that for now. If anyone does have any good recommendations though, I'd still appreciate them. Thanks.

I don't use a camera for mocap but I am trying out using my phone as a camera for OBS Studio (screen video capture software). I use a free PC + phone app called Iriun Webcam and the video quality is much better than I expected. I haven't tested it exhaustively yet but so far, no glitches.
