Making a haircut scene?

Hi everyone! smiley

I'm looking to create a render in what my character is cutting her hair off, is there any way to do such a thing in DAZStudio?

    Are you implying that you need an environment, poses, props or something for such a hair cutting scene?

    No, I more mean how am I supposed to make the hair on 2 seperated part once it's cutted. Like on those pictures :

    For some, not all, models of hair, you could export them out as .obj, cut off what you want cut off, then reimport each piece. These would be as props then [not rigged]. If you try this method, make a shader preset or mat preset of the hair first, so that can be applied to the imported mesh. If 'all' one does is cut one into two pieces, the uvmaps should stay the same.

    Alternatively one can use available pieces and pretend that they were cut off of a larger hairdo, for eg this one which is free: https://www.artstation.com/marketplace/p/6YLaA/hair-3d-hairstyle-model-long-plait

    Also, I think that there are a few hairdos in the store which have the main hair and then an add-on bun or braid, etc. I don't have a list of them though.

    I'm kinda new do Daz and I'm not sure I understand how to do everthing you just mentioned.. Do you by any chance have a few screenshots showing me where to click to do all that?.. :( I already have the hair I wanna cut.

    With the hair selected, File > send over the bridge to Hexagon and D/S will open Hexagon presupposing it's been installed and the programs have been told where each other are.

    As for how to do the work in Hexagon, no I don't happen to have any images handy atm.

    Is this a hair sold at Daz3D? I have a number of them but certainly not all.

    I'm just afraid that most of the hair products do not have that many hair lines as per the pics you attached, even if you can 'cut' the braid with Geometry Editor or external modeling software, and simulate it then...

    Maybe go for making some texture maps, or making a particle hair with Blender / other hair tools...

    The way I do stuff like that is to:

    1. Make a Duplicate (or load another copy) of the hair
    2. Make a selection with the Geometry Editor - the same selection on both - the part of the hair to be removed after the cut
    3. For the main one (fit to the character), with the Geometry Editor still active, right-click > Geometry Editing > Delete Selected Polygons
    4. For the duplicate, with the Geometry Editor still active, right-click > Geometry Selection > Invert Selection
    5. Right-click > Geometry Editing > Delete Selected Polygons

    The duplicate is not "Fit To" anything. If it is already, make it so it's not. Don't worry if this changes things in the scene. We'll get to that.

    When the hand that is to remove the cut hair is in position (along the timeline), line up the duplicate portion to match where it should be, and adjust the scale, etc., if necessary.

    mCasual has a wonderful script for setting the origin of things, which is what I use. It's free but I can't recall the exact name just now, and I'm in the middle of simulating, so I can't check. I'll try and come back later with a link.

    Without that script, we can simply use a good ol' Null. So

    1. Create > New Null (Null Hand)
    2. Parent the new Null to the hand that should remove the cut hair (at the point where the hand is in the right position to reach the hair as if it wasn't cut)
    3. Create > New Null (Null Cut Off)
    4. Select the cut hair duplicate, then Ctrl + Select the new Null > Align (with all axis still set to Origin)
    5. Now we can drag the cut hair onto the new Null and it should remain in place. 
    6. Make a duplicate of the cut hair (Edit > Duplicate Node) 
    7. Align the new duplicate to the previous one so they are in the same space and adjust the scale, etc., if necessary.
    8. Create a new Null (Null Disappear) and drag it onto the original hair - the one that's Fit To the character
    9. Select the new cut hair duplicate, then Ctrl + Select the new Null and Align
    10. Now when we parent the new cut hair chunk to the new null, it's parented also to the hair which is conformed to the figure.

    How to make this whole contraption work in a fluid animation:

    At the point along the timeline when the hand is in the right position to catch the cut hair:

    1. Select Null Disappear and set the scale to 0 (zero)
    2. Back up one frame and change the scale to 100
    3. While still on this frame, set the scale for Null Cut to 0 (zero)
    4. Advance to the next frame and change the scale back to 100
    5. Go to the very first frame of the animation and set the scale (Null Cut still selected) to 0 again to hold the zero scale.

    What we've just done is to replace the one hair duplicate with another using a scale value of zero. Both of these are identical except that one is parented to the hair (Null Disappear) and one to the hand that removes it. What's left behind on the character's head is the hair after it's been cut.

     

    I've never done this for cutting hair before, but I do these sorts of procedures all the time. The actual process may vary according to the needs of the scene, but it's all the same sort of illusion all the same.

    It would be easier to grasp if I had time to make a video about it, and perhaps I shall one day.

    Just to clarify: When I'm saying "When the hand is in the right position to remove the hair", this is where we need to Create our Nulls and edit the hair and duplicates so that This is where our initial key frames take place. It will save us a lot of headaches down the road.

    That said, if the part of the cut hair is going out of whack before the hair is cut, try to copy the key frames of that piece from the working point described above to frame 0 (zero). You might also need to change that key at frame zero to Linear.

    I'm usually doing these sorts of tricks with props, so I simply load them at the working point, giving them that spot as their initial key frame - which is really handy because that carries through all the way back to frame zero in many cases.

     Yes however when we are more familiar with how all the programs work, the tasks seem easier. Trying to explain it all out for somebody just starting out, it can be rather daunting [takes me about a week to make one of those step by step .pdf tutorials and right now just haven't had the time either.]

    I think possibly the best route to take is for purchasing hairdos that are condusive for the project. Easy enough to have a 'wild hair' enter, and a 'neat short' version leave -- for $2.99 or 3.99 plus at least 1 purchase of new over $1. I picked up a couple to see how it might go. I'm dreaming, maybe tomorrow I might have some time HOWEVER we're also expecting more heat wave and at a certain temp. all computers go off around here.

    Post work can help with the bushy ends too.

    Also, one could make a dense plain of mesh [small, for hand to hold], make/save it into to a "figure" [just to get some rigging] - then use the SBH to draw out a bunch of hair strands. Saving that as a wearable if I recall correctly.
