Camera presets not saving correctly?

So I have a scene with about 20 cameras in place to cover it. I'd like to save out those presets to use in a very similar scene - same set, same actors, just in somewhat different poses.

In the source scene I've selected the cameras and saved them as a preset.

In the target scene I import the preset … and the cameras all seem to appear in the scene with their x/y/z coords (not their rotations or other settings) relative to 'zero' in the target scene (where the default view loads with the perspective view). So they have the correct relative placement and orientation, but are clustered around the center of the view, not the actors - their absolute locations in the source scene have not been saved, apparently, or are not being calculated correctly on import, and are being set to relative locations.

I cannot for the life of me figure out WTH is going wrong. Shouldn't they appear in the target scene in the same absolute locations that I saved them out from in the source scene? If that's not how camera presets work, what's the workaround to my having to reset 20+ angles in the new scene?

DS 4.8, MacOSx.10.10.5.

  • Were the cameras parented? If so that's about what I would expect - I don't know if a wearables preset would save parented cameras (or lights), if not it may be worth a feature request.

  • No, they weren't parented to anything, but it's an interesting thing to bear in mind for the future.

It wouldn't be quite so irksome if I were able to select all the cameras at once and reposition them appropriately in the scene, but I can't do that. Or at least it looks like I can't.

Is there an upper limit to the number of cameras that can be saved out as a preset file?

  • You could group the cameras (Create>New Group), then move the group into position.

I don't know if there's an upper limit - at least, not without exceeding the size of the array pointer - and I'm not sur why you would have this issue if the items aren't parented. Perhaps a bug report is warranted.

  • A bug report might be warranted. Originally I did save the presets as their own group. When that didn't work I ungrouped them and tried again, and still no joy.

What I have not tried yet is saving the camera group as a scene subset; maybe that's a workaround.

Have you had success saving camera presets?

  • Okay - grouping the cameras and saving the group as a scene subset worked. This is rather profoundly relieiving, since I really didn't want to have to reset two dozen of those buggers. Some of them have very particular parameters for framing and DOF control!

I'd be interested to know, though, if anyone else is experiencing difficulty in exporting camera presets speciically as camera presets.
