If only I had known in advance...

edited July 2023 in The Commons

I seldom interact on these forums, because I don't really want the drama.  However, I need to give a word of advice for anyone interested in the Legacy UVs for Genesis 9 product.  This is not a complaint. Just a word of advice.  If I were able to have access to the readme in advance, I would not have purchased the product, to be very honest.  However, I am going to absorb the expense since it's already sitting in my timeline as a standby option for character building.  The critical point is that this product needs the user to convert, on their own, the many H.Materials of Genesis 3 and Genesis 8 to Material Presets BEFORE they can use the script to apply them to Genesis 9.  Depending on how desperate one is to use legacy G3 and G8 character H.Materials on G9, and on how much time one has to do these conversions, the product is likely to become a white elephant in the Content Library.

You can access readmes in advance, they're all available in the wiki.

Link to any product readme will have the following format: http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/read_me/index/<product_sku>/start
For example http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/read_me/index/87928/start for the G9 legacy UV for earlier female figures.
If you have the Daz deals browser add-on installed it will add a link to the readme on product pages.

And yes, hierarchical materials won't work on other figures. One had the same problem when using G8 materials on G3 and vice-versa.

Another store starting with "R" has a link to a product's ReadMe right on the page, no add-on or URL tricks needed. More customer-friendly.

I don't think hierarchical materials were widely used until G8 because of the eyelashes becoming a separate mesh. I don't use G3 materials on G8 that often, but I've never hade a problem when I did.

hierarchical anything leaving me more unimpressed each product I buy be it skins, clothing presets, poses and animations

I don't use stuff out of the box, click and load and render

is OK if texture loads for individual parts are also provided but more often they are not, I won't buy anything ever again from one PA I used to like not only because of their views on stuff but because their mask sets are all hierarchical presets only and on specific figures so if you only use parts you cannot load the alternative textures

  • Self-Explanatory. Despite jumping through the hoops to create Material Presets from Hierarchical Materials, this is the type of result I get...

I am having extreme difficulty uploading my screencapture to this forum, so I'll link it to my X account post

You need to apply the materials to the GeoGrafts - I don't have the product but I thought there was a script to do that.

There were some combined materials for figure + anatomical elements for earlier figures. But yes, that has become more common with G8.

You're supposed to apply the preset to both the figure and the geografts. IIRC the preparation script ends with all of them selected.

OK I have managed to get a converted H.Material now in Material Preset format applied to a script-prepared G9M. I think there is probably some bug in the preview for the Render Tab, because the same camera view in the Loading and Creating Tab does not show the geograft artifacts.

Once again, as my computer appears unable to upload my screen captures to this forum, I am putting the images up at my X dot com time line.

The uploading problem is a Daz problem. It is not a problem with you or your computer. We are all suffering from the same issue. Linking from some other site, like you are doing, is the recommended procedure for now.

I tried the geograph solutions from prior generations a couple of earlier generations and didn't like them. They work, but are problematic at times. Then it was needed because there wasn't a lot of skin material texture sets available, but since Genesis 8 has come about that paucity of skin texture sets isn't nearly as big a problem as it used to be, so I don't buy those geograft old generations to new generations solutions anymore. Even better, with Genesis 9 I don't even need the Male - Female UV interchange and male - female clothing autofit interchange products anymore.

Thanks for the tip.  I'm unable to use it but others may.  Was trying to find Merch restrictions on https://www.daz3d.com/lashes-utilities-merchant-resource-for-genesis-9

At first I'm like, am I tripping?  That second screenshot looks fisheyed.  Then I opened it in a new tab & it isn't.  So I am not tripping.  Bummer.  If I was it'd probably stop the oncoming migrane.  So much for "retail therapy."

Because I am getting the hang of using the Legacy UVs script, I went ahead and bought the one for female characters as well.  I managed to get this result using a charcter material set from a non-Daz3D marketplace (yes, the Other One).  As before, my computer doesn't permit upload to this forum for goodness knows what reason, so I have uploaded it to my X dot com account

It's not your computer, it's a general (intermittent) problem with the forums and attachments.

I'll add another endorsement for the Daz Deals Browser Add On, it can do more than just give you a quick link to the readme pages. It also adds links to the forum whenever somebody posts the link to the store page. So if anybody drops any links to a Daz product in this thread, if you use the add on, you will find a link to this thread if you happen to go to that product's store page. That is the best way to find people discussing a particular product. Thus, just post a link to the Legacy UVs to this thread, and anybody using Daz Deals can see this thread if they go to its store page.

These two things alone are very helpful, but the add on can do lots more.

Yes, it is a shame that the store cannot just do these things already, and the Daz forums are among the technolocally worst I have seen. Not being able to post a pic in the forum is only the latest issue these forums have. They are constantly flaking out, forum search is more than useless, no spell checker, and basic formatting is broken on mobile browsers...just to name a few. You have to use the Daz Browser add on just to give the forum some basic functionality. So that is yet another reason to get the browser add on.
