Messy, unkempt hair - suitable for young adult male. Ideas?

Today's hair sale prompts me to inquire - when/if needed, what are your favorite/go-to hair styles for unkempt older teen/young adult males? I'm trying to find the right look for a major character in my story, so it needs to be a decent hair that can stand up to close-ups. This character is someone who lives on the margins of society and is not someone who can be bothered with niceties like brushing hair every day. There's no shortage of long hair - but I'm looking for something overgrown but more shoulder length at most. And there's truckloads of shaved-side styles that have tops and/or opposite sides that would be OK, but keeping a shaved-side hair style neatly shaved ... requires attention and effort, which doesn't fit this character.

I have bought a lot of hair products and am thinking I probably have some overlooked gems in my collection, or maybe there's something I've looked at a hundred times and not bought that actually could be just what I'm looking for.

One that I've found useful recently in several scenes is dForce Idol and Explorer Hair for Genesis 8 and 9. It has a lot of styling dials that make it much more versatile than you'd think from the main promo.

That's another one I bought at yesterday's hair sale to try out. The good thing about having a cast of thousands (OK, dozens) is that there's plenty of characters that will need a signature hair style, so it gives an excuse to pick up several to test.

I ended up sharing a WIP for a different thread and figured I might as well share here also for anyone who is following this conversation. I ended up trying a bunch of hair ideas on this character - pretty much every suggestion in this thread and also the other thread that was linked, as well as numerous others. For the moment, this is the iteration that came closest to how I had envisioned him.

This is a combination of Varun and Chaotic.
