Why tiny wings on headgear

I've noticed a few nice looking scifi helmets in the store have small wings attached, is this some kind of trend or a reference to some anime? For me this make what could be a useful futuristic helmet look like a cartoon item.
The recent Trogan suit for example, does anyone know if the wings are removable?

Perhaps this is a reference to the Greco-Roman god Hermes/Mercurius and to Gallic, Germanic and medieval helmets. One would have to see images of the helmets you mean.
Personally, I think it is both the Greco-Roman Hermes/Mercury thing mixed with the Art Moderne/ Streamline aesthetic of Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon.
Looking at the features, there is a feature labeled "Hide Ant": which I believe is short for "antennae". Making a bold assuimption here, I suspect the Hermes/Mercury styled 'winglets" are meant to be transceiver aerials. So, yeah, I think they can be made to vanish.
I tend to agree, especially since the wings/antennae connect at at points directly over the ears.
Why? Because it's cool!
Ok, thanks for all the replies folks.

Or in more recent years. A Thor-style helmet from the movies and comics.
ah now I see the link I understand too, MidnightStories adds wings to lots of his stuff, often crosses as well
If it can be hidden with a invisble surface texture then there is a workaround, but its an odd add for an otherwise usable helmet.
Perhaps the hats were soaked in Red Bull...?
Red Bull... gives you wings...
the hat grew wings... because of the Red Bull...
Wow, seeing that written out is way worse than when I thought it...
