Hi All
After having to do a new install of Daz studio and running into the PostgreSQL bug.
I did a search in the forum (mmmm did help a bit) for any info that would/could help.
i found that lots of people were running into the same problems.
Just what do you really need to install to the main Studio program folder.
this is not about " you must have this model its wounderful" its about the stuff you REALLY NEED to make Daz Studio to work.
things like "Genesis 9 Starter Essentials" needed for almost anything Genesis 9.
So if you know of anything please post with any helpful info.

If you use DIM, it will give you the basic list of all the necessary products needed to install when it opens the first time or when re-installing.
After that, I would look at any DO morph pack that you have purchased for each generation as they might be needed for PA characters.
If you purchased any plug-ins, decide for yourself if you want to install them again.
Clothing, sets, shaders, hair, props as you desire or find you enjoy using. This is totally based on your preferences and what you own now and your storage capability.
The videos by Jay Verlius are great for showing how to do things with the tools built into Daz Studio.
(This is from my experience from re-installing and new installs on three computers since 2016.)

Somewhat 'tongue in cheek' I would say:-
A large wallet for all those super deals that you can't pass up
A huge hard disk to store all your purchases of said deals
24/7 Access to the DAZ website so you don't miss a sale
On a more serious note I think it depends on what you intend to use Studio for, and how you intend to use it. Some people like to buy and use ready made content, some like to modify things to their own taste, some are into animation, some like to make and import their own models.
Which should not be the C-drive
I have DS and all my content on the C drive and have never had any issues I know some on the forums preach what you are saying and on my next PC, I might go that route since all newer PCs use SSD or M2 drives and there really isn't any room for anything but the OS, but my C drive is a 4TB WD drive that is half full with DS and lots of other apps.
If one uses relatively recent assets in a scene, it is better to have 32GB's or more RAM because with 16GB's one is still using virtual memory and when that happens, the whole computer starts crawling.
When I'm working with DS, the total RAM usage is usually between 16-30GB's and I have a pretty good idea how to spot and avoid the most resource hungry and unoptimized assets. The appearance or physical dimensions of an asset do not tell anything about how heavy it is, one can have a whole town in a scene and it's light on the resources, while a pair of boots or a single piece of jewelry can bring an otherwise decent computer down to it's knees.
The reasoning behind not putting them on C-drive are;
1. When a drive starts having problems, it is usually the drive with the OS and the problems are not necessarily about the drive itself but the OS refusing to boot and sometimes even the filesystem having been corrupted to a point that the files cannot be read even on another computer without the help of recovery tools - Recovering ones important files with a recovery tool amongst millions of (worthless) OS files, temp files etc. is something one never wants to do after having done it the first time.
2. Using the MS created "My xxxx" has concequenses, like the OneDrive highjacking ones files and moving them out of ones computer or the OS claiming one doesn't have rights to access the files through the door one tried to use.
3. The default pathnames are way too long, which can still be a problem when the Content Library adds even longer pathnames on top of it.
4. When the Content Library is on another drive, it is easy to move it to another computer and if one needs to reinstall the OS, one doesn't need to worry about the Content Library at all
5. The C-drive is accessed all the time by the OS, having the Content Library on another drive allows that drive to be read/written without having to wait for the OS to stop playing with itself.
Daz Studio has a long list of additional content as part of the download. You would want the dforce essentials, the genesis 8 starter essential, the genesis 9 starter essential, the iray hdr set in there, probaby some of the available bridges depending on your potential uses.
Some people use a portable harddrive for their content
Yeah, a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE SSD is a must !
Make sure you go for a GC with at least 12gb ram on it , added to a reasonnable amount of ram on your mother board ( I would not go under 32 gib, but it's just me )
As usual nobody has bothered to read the OP, he isn't interested in Content, but rather what is needed to make the program run.
Basically you just need the installer from your Product library.
The issue most have with PostgreSQL is down to one of two things
1) The Content Management System (CMS) is being blocked from running, this is caused by your AV/Firewall and/or Windows own security systems.
2) Connect, the directory listed for this in the Content Directory Manager needs to exist or be writeable.
thanks to all that posted it has been a help.
lets see if I can address your replies.
1st memcneil70 thanks you this is something I was asking after and I have downloaded and installed that.
2nd background. this was a reinstall after my 10 year old system died so I have a good bit of Daz and Poser stuff. My liberary folder is over 3 TB on a 4TB SSD drive (backed up) that was not my "C" drive, this is also a SSD drive, just a bit smaller.
3rd PerttiA addressed above in "2nd"
4th NylonGirl my new Rig is :-
CPU-intel i7 -13700k raptor lake,
motherboard-Gigerbyte Z790 Aorus elite ax,
Ram-Aorus rgb memory ddr5 (64GB'S)
Graphic card-Gigerbyte geforce eagle 3060 12GB
CPU cooler-NZXT kraken 280rgb
power supply-Corsair rm1000x
So I think it will be OK.
5th FirstBastion i think I covered that in my OP, thanks for saying it.
6th Cyklone Covered above.
7th Bejaymac thank you I have it fixed I think. lets just say things are running.
No I have not missed out FSMCDesigns comment "I have DS and all my content on the C drive and have never had any issues "lets just say. Its always good until its not. I dont keep my library on my "C" drive because 1/ I have a custom layout to my library(many vendors file layout is poop most of the time. 2/ its over 3TB 3/ last time my PC died it took me 6 months to reinstall it the way I wanted it ( luckly I have back ups of back ups. a bit much maybe but some of my stuff you cannot get anywhere anymore)
so thanks again to everyone that replies
...I tend to only use my C: (boot) drive for the OS. programmes and some utilities, hence it is small (240GB SSD)
My content library is on a 2 TB drive (SSD). and I have a 2 TB HD for sotrage purposes.
I also have a 4 TB partitioned external backup.
Even when I was still using HDDs, this setup worked just fine or me for many years.
With the abandonment of W7, I am having to move to a new system that will be W11 based.. I will still be using the same drives, PSU and case while upgrading just the MB (ASUS B550 Creator AM4) , CPU (Ryzen7 5700X), Memory (64 GB DDR4 3200), GPU (RTX 3060 12 GB - which I already have), and CPU cooler (Arctic Freezer DB4).
Hell, I've had threads where commenters not only didn't read the OP, but apparently didn't even read the entire thread title.
I will state one more obvious one hardware requirement, you must have a nvidia card to use iray, and using toady's current criteria a rtx 3060 would be a reasonable requirement for daz studio to run and load a scene efficiently.
That is if you intens to use DS4.21
earlier version may handle different specs. for example I have a gtx 980 running DS4.10 just fine,
