Hawaiian or Polynesian Characters?

Would like to do a Surf themed tribute to Maui fire, but need some hawaiian or Polynesian actors.

What actor is PAMWO using or made own?

Couldn't find male that Ken Gilliland is using for his product either.  Something like this for the guys would be ideal.  : )

Just a couple of examples of what was hoping to find but might not be that much out there.  They don't have to be exact match.

Understand that I have only spent one day/night in Hawaii, so my personal knowledge of the people is limited. But, looking at the news reports showed a range of ethnicities from the U.S.A. who made Maui their home.

Here are a few from Genesis 8 and 8.1:

You might also look at Japanese and Chinese characters in your runtime or bi-racial characters.

The ethnic makeup of modern-day Maui is, to put it mildly, not representative of the indigenous people of the Hawaiian islands. This is Lili'uokalani, the last queen of Hawaii:

Yes, she is lovely and why I kept my suggestions to the characters who most closely matched her people. Morph sliders can modify them further closer to reality.

I have always fancied Kalea 7 for Genesis 3.

Here's a list w/ thumbnails and links of Daz characters that can pass for Malay/Indonesian. There will be some that can also pass for ethnic Hawaiians.

Quite a list. This has sort of snowballed.  A relatives had planned short vacation to Maui-- that's what gave me the idea.

Thanks for the Lili'uokalani reference photo BTW.  Probably have to tweak nose, mouth & skintones most all of them.

For guys, Kimo seems easy match.  Had forgotten about Valentino 8.  Is face asymetric? Option to disable it?  Might be a deal breaker since I have astigmatism and my work tends to be skewed anyway.  : 0 !

For the ladies, if not Kalea, Alawa, Noska or Kayo all show promise.  Nice to know so many options for both sexes.

    ---
Final questions.  I'm not familiar with "TomcatoLiver's" work but Nalanee seems a good match too.  If I like Sabby's textures, I'll probably like "Tomcat's"?   (Yes that calls for speculation)   Anyone have JASA's "Farah" ?   Skintone looks a match.  Would need face & body tweaks.  Surfing, not swimsuit modeling.  ; )

Anyway, thanks for replies & enjoy week

If you are interested in surfing scenes with Kimo and Kalea, you might want to take a look at these:

Thanks for the tip.   Opening frame might have Hawaiian hero/heroine surfing as context.  Then they learn of the fire & story picks up from there as they try to help put.

Surf/swimteam bodysuits will save me some time. Had been messing with geoshells & cutout textures for a couple of scuba suits.

Manu a shoe-in since have Dain.  The more 'native' looking actors I can get the better. yes

Thanks again for everyones help!  : )

For items used by vendors at Rendo, you can always click the "Contact" button on the product page and send them a message asking them.  Most are pretty helpful, and  reply within a few days.

That character in the pamawo promo doesn't strike me particularly as Polynesian, though.  The vendor lists Jang Hee-Jin by Ravenstone under Editorial, but the character in the promos doesn't look anything like it.

    I think Liloo fits.

    https://www.daz3d.com/liloo-hd-for-genesis-3-and-8-female

The character uses the growing up morphs by default, but will be adult without them. The skin is also pretty decent.

Also, don't forget that skins made for G3 will work on G8. If the store page says it uses the 'base Genesis 3 UV', then the skin textures will work on G8 without any issue. If it uses a unique UV there are ways around that as well.

Contact them directly.  Laughing.  Seems so obvious once pointed out.  Thanks for tip about PAMOWO actor/varient.  Looks like Ravenstone has closed shop, so even if wanted to spend time tweaking face & skin, a moot point.  Still interested in the one Gilliland used.  Dusk actor?  Don't remember if HW made Dawn/Dusk for Ds or not.  Guess I'll find out if he replies.

I'd run across Liloo, so nice to know she'd 'adult' unless set otherwise.  Need to learn more about UV maps and matching textures.   Think there's two G8 to G9 converters out now.  Have read both still have trouble with eyes, and (when last checked commercial topic) shredded hands?  : 0 !

Sort of straying off my own topic though so better log off.

    Thanks again for everyone's replies : )

Genesis 3 to 8 is the easiest because they are basically identical. At least the bases are. G8 thankfully ended the silly practice where 'core' characters often had their own unique UV map. That frustrated people to no end. But many G3 textures are indeed the base UV, and will work on G8 without any issue. The eyes changed a little bit, but you probably have plenty of eye textures for G8 as it is. You can often just copy the surfaces from G3 and paste them to G8 and that works fine. Just look at the product page. Every G3 character should list the UV map it uses in its details. If it says it uses the G3 base, then grab it, because these will work the easiest.

There is a product that allows G8 to use all the different unique UVs from G3. Wear Them All, I believe. So that would be the simplest way to get any G3 regardless of its UV map to work on G8.

You can also do this the hard way by "baking" textures of the unique UVs to match the G3 base. Victoria 7 has her own UV map that is just a little different from Genesis 3 base. This is a sort of tedious process at first, but once you do a couple times it isn't nearly as bad as it might sound. I personally like this method, because once you match the base UV, that opens all kinds of doors to play with textures. You can mix and match textures to your heart's content. You can make G3 people look more like your favorite G8 people. Like some characters are just too shiny, or the way their skin looks stands out too much with other characters in a render.

For example, take a Bluejaunte character. These characters are often very nice, but stand out from others with how light reflects off them. They kind of clash. You can fix this by swapping some of the glossy maps that the bluejaunte characters have into other characters. This can tie the characters in a scene together much better. You can do this with pretty much anybody. You can do the same with a Mousso character, whatever suits you. This can work true magic with older characters that people have forgotten or thought were outdated. So you can take Kalea 7 and give her gloss maps from Macy and Chani, match the gloss settings, and Kalea will have a glossiness that matches Macy and Chani.

But again, for this to work, the textures all need to be the same UV map, and you'd need to bake Kalea 7 textures to G3 base UV first to do that. On the flip side, P3D Aluna uses the G3 base UV (even though she comes in the Kalea bundle!) So you could simply drop Maci and Chani's gloss maps onto Aluna.

Sadly bluejaunte never made any male characters. But I fixed that, too. I used the baking process to bake my favorite Bluejaunte gloss maps to match the G8 male base, yes, you can do that, too. So now I can apply these bluejaunte style gloss maps to any of my male G8 characters.

Perhaps I am weird, but I kind of enjoy doing this sort of thing. I find it quite satisfying to take a character like Kalea and make her fresh again with something like this.

G9 is a different story. The UV maps are too different for a simple method to wear past gen skins. The one we have does some tricks to accomplish this, like creating new UV spots on the model to pop the texture on. This does work, but IMO is not really ideal, because many of the things I just described above go out the window. However this could work for you if you have no plans on doing things like that, and just want to get the skins on G9 models.

HW3D original figures have both poser and DS versions, same for the add-ons made directly by the HW3D team. Ken's Hawaiian outfit for Dusk has both a poser and DS version too.

A lot of items for them from other artists are only for Poser though.

Brief update for my records if revisit topic. Everyone's been very helpful in building a list.

Following Sevrin's suggestion, contacted Ken Gilliland who seemed veey nice in reply.   Actor in Royal Hawaiian promo is Zhen for G8.1 by DAZ & Goanna.

    http://www.daz3d.com/zhen-hd-for-genesis-81-male

Thanks Outrider42 for info about uv maps.   Copied & pasted to pdf.  Going to be a challenging project.   The ground plane looks more like Planet Asphalt rather than charred ash.  Install Blender or Carrera maybe....

Leana, good to know HW made actors for DS.  Hopefully I have Dawn/Dusk zips somewhere.  Think they made Polynesian actor for Dusk but never heard back from messaging Rendo when HW moved.  I'm digressing now, so time to close.

Thanks, everyone, for time in replies. ;)

Wear Them All are autofit clones for moving clothing between generations.

The product you are thinking of is a G8 UV support for G3 UVs. These products:

Right now the 2 items are on sale for $7.68 each; less if you are a Daz+ member &/or own/buy a Golden Ticket item.

Thanks for the links.  Kalani & UV map utilities added to wishlist just in case.

For a test though, I picked up Riversoft's G3F Character Converter & seems to worked out well.  Kalea 7 to seamless Kalea 8 then 8.1 from properties.  She looks nice!

Companion Kimo (and others) might have to wait.  Don't know how I overlooked Kimo, but DAZ is proud of its products.  "There's always another sale" type thing.  ; )

I'll finish by thanking everyone yet again.  Never imagined so many replies!  : )

Hello and sorry for the delay in my response. This is "MI CHA" a personal character but who will soon be in my store.
    THANKS

  • I would like to also say, looking around at other Asian races and mix-matching skins might give some good results.

I was on a long search for a good filipina character and settled on Keiko with another skin (an older G3 one Liling I think). The artist who made Keiko, Warlock, also has quite a number of Southeast asian characters that might work.

I'm honored you'd reply.  How you'd even know about my esoteric topic here is beyond me!

I missed your "I Bid Farewell" announcement tho.  : (

PM sent at Rendo if still monitoring communications there.

Thank you very much for so many quality products.

    Kind regards & best wishes.  : )

Thanks.  Keiko looks pretty good.  Always good to find another PA who does quality work.  Finding characters for this project has been a real eye opener.  The more diverse the better!  : )
