Upgrading PC - Which GPU? 3080 Vs 4060 12GB?

I'm currently running a GTX 1060 6GB from 2016, and I'm often hitting filling the VRAM and causing my iRay renders to hit CPU only mode, even when I do a reboot and render.

This "3d Workstation" also does Video rendering and games, some new features of the newer cards is nice to have. DAZ Studio seems to be the current driving force consider an upgade.

I'm in the UK, and I can find second hand RTX 3080s for about £450 to £500 range. This is the about price of the RTX 4060 12GB.

I think the 3080 does renders faster than 4060, but there's 2GB extra Vram head room in the 4060. I don't think some of the new tools are available on Daz Studio. While the 4060's AV1 Encode Support is nice, all I'd see myself using it for is streaming to YouTube.

Do I go for a Older card RTX 3080 or go for the RTX 4060 12GB? Please can explain why you think I should pick that card.

The problem with RTX 3080 I think is the thermal. It's very hot.
It will give you a headache someday. High temperature just makes component life span shorter. At the end you need to change the thermalpad.
Cos I think the manufacturer use bad thermal pad on those series.

The temp of my 3080ti is very hot, my room also get hot. And it just keep rising and rising after time, and bring me worry each time I hit render.
When I tried to change the thermal pad, alas, I short the component somehow. It just give me bad luck time after time.

At the end I spend more money than what I tried to save.

Since I don't know your workload, hard to say. If you just do rendering occasionaly, and you need to buy now, then 4060.

But I would suggest that you save more money to get 4070 ti or 4080 16gb.
4070ti is around as fast 3080ti 3090 with much less heat.

4080 16 gb will give you more headroom, since windows eat some of the gpu memory to operate.
It will also give you more freedom to work on a scene with many characters and environment. Especially if you use genesis 9.
And sometimes environment also takes a lot of memory space

If you have to render many in a  day, definetly 4070ti above. And the higher the resolution you want to render, the higher end your GPU needs to be.

In the UK 16gb 4060ti cards are starting at £430 and up now, I'd probably throw another £30 in for one of the three fan versions if you have space.  You'll have to have a mooch around the forum to see how people are getting on with them in DS.
