8K? Eye weirdness? G9 mysteries
I'm starting to like using G9 more, but there are some things I can't quite figure out about it...
- Where are the supposed 8k textures? Product descriptions keep saying they're included with the Base G9 figure, but the textures I have (the three male and three female ones) are not 8K.
- Thimor's eye textures are being loaded from a temporary directory in my Windows user folder and not from within the Runtime/Textures folder structure like everything else. Why is this happening? Are they LIEs, and why is that necessary?
- Do DAZ characters only come with one eye color now and we're supposed to use the ones from the Essentials pack? I can't find any additional MATs for different eyes, makeup, lip colors, or any other extras etc like I could with G8 characters.
Thanks for any information.

The only 8K textures we get in Daz characters are the Details normal maps. The advertising doesn't explain that. It simply says G9 comes with 8K textures, which is technically true (because of the Details normal maps), but it leads us to believe that the skin diffuse, etc. would also be 8K. There was a big discussion at release time, with users expressing disappointment that what they got did not live up to the expectation created by the advertisement wording. We then got an explanation that if all the textures were 8K it would be too big of a resource hog and we would not be happy.
G9 eye textures are LIE. Sclera and Iris are combined with LIE, so you can change them independently. Some vendors don't follow that convention for some reason. Yes, I think you are supposed to use the eye colors from the essentials packs.
You can find a lot of eye colors in the Genesis 9 Starter Essentials. I was confused about the one eye color with charaters, too, but I accidentally stumbled onto the extra colors in the Starter Essentials when I was looking for something else.
Wow, that 8K business is pretty...lousy, to be honest. Reminds me of a TV I bought that was 4K and 120hz - nowhere did it say that it wasn't 4K AT 120hz. I only discovered that when I connected it to a PC. DAZ really should change their language to say that it includes 8K detail maps; that still sounds good and doesn't give the wrong impression.
Thanks for the information about the eyes. I was curious because to be honest, the Essential eyes look like they don't line up properly. The slight detail-less edges of the iris look like you're using eyes with a different UV map...I guess they're accurate though, it must just be me.
