Discovering Content You Forgot You Have...

I've been playing with DAZ Studio since the release of Genesis, so I've accquired a lot of content since then. Recently, the external drive I had it installed on died, so I've been re-installing content as I have time. During this process, I've found some gems that I don't even remember buying. I know I'm getting old, but it's a bit odd. The cool thing is finding nice things that I didn't know I had, but are just what I need at the moment. It's kind of like finding money in your wallet you didn't know was there.

One of the things I found was a set of circlets (actually 4 different sets) that were perfect for a render I was working on. I'm sure I'll find some other things I didn't know were hiding in my account.

Has anyone else rediscovered content they forgot they had?

  • Well, yes, but not sure it has the same effect since I am relatively new but my memory is terrible :(

However, that is probably also because the scenes that I build generally are not on the same theme and so I have had to cast a wide net in terms of assets and products to acquire. Perhaps someone who was illustrating a Visual Novel or Comic would have been able to be a bit more discerning about what they buy to keep it more manageable.

I always felt I had a good idea of the content I had, but the other day when I loaded the store page, I checked the box to only show items I own and discovered a few things I wasn't aware of and plenty of content I haven't even loaded into a scene, LOL

Yes,  I have a folder sitting on my desktop named "You OWN THESE" ,  with screen snaps of store pages that have the big red purchased button on them, products purchased and owned  and forgotten about that pop up during store searches for things i'm looking for,  and have fogotten are already in the library.  It good to have a way to refresh the memory of usable and owned  items.

  • Just today, in fact (among many times). I was checking to see if some of Lady Littlefox's V4 ballet items were still on deep discount so I could replace them. (I'd bought them from RDNA years ago before it was sold to Daz, but they didn't make it into my account here) They weren't on sale any more, so I added the individual pieces I really liked to my wishlist for the next sale. Then I decided to search for G3/G8 ballet clothes in the store. One of the items was Dance Gear for G3F - there was the Download button below the thumbnail! I don't even recall seeing it in the store before, much less buying it.

This is partly true. I am just as guilty of tossing "Ooh that is so cool!" stuff in the cart as the next person, but at some point, I (try to) consciously ask myself: "Is that something that reasonably can be used with any story that I am working on now or might ever pull back out the drawer and work on again?" That means that there's a lot of content that I toss back. But ... I randomly find "what was I thinking" products in my library that I bought and forgot about, and it's almost as fun as finding them the first time.

That does help that you can do that to keep yourself in check. I find it tricky to do this since there is a wide range of things I currently have on my list to do and in addition there is probably a good 80-90% of products that I could concievably see myself using in the future (if I ever learn to stop taking so long on each image). That number is shrinking tho, partly because the more things I buy the less things remain in the shop but also because often I can atleast see something that looks cool/pretty/awesome but also be reasonably confident that I already have something similar in my library.

Constantly, probably on the average of once or twice a week (I have a LOT of products). The most irritating thing, though, is buying something that you already bought at one store and then come across on at a different one, or that you bought when it was a poser or 3delight product that's been reissued with the only difference being iray textures... currently my biggest bane there tends to be former RDNA artists who moved to DAZ first before moving on again to Renderosity, but there are plenty of others who mix new-new releases with products that were in another store, and then DAZ itself has a lot of weird cases where an item is available in a bundle that I own, yet the same product still shows as unpurchased in the store.

  • Every once in a while I go through my purchase history at the stores that still exist to see what I've all purchased. I generally buy with a render in mind, but then life interferes and I don't get around to using it. Often I'm pleasantly surprised by what I've found. Sometimes I find stuff and wonder what I was thinking when I bought the item LOL

Happens to me all the time like...

    - when I ask a PA about a particular promo only to learn that I already own some of the things used.
    - browsing new products which do have a "Additional products used in promo images"-section (unfortunately not all do)

But that's DAZ stuff. It's even harder with stuff bought from Rendo or elsewhere. Therefore I really dislike "shop-hopping" of vendors especially when products are released on multiple platforms.

Because this is a hobby for me & I have a very limited budget, I have been trying to get in the habit of not buying until I look through the product library in My Account*  to see if I have something similar that can be used, even with a little work. I've started picking up utilities to help with that. Another habit I have started is to not put off trying out things I just bought. Does it load without missing file or other error messages? Does it autofit or convert well if I am using with another figure? If a utility, do I understand the manual or other instructions (video, info thumbnails)?

*The My Account/Product Library search function works way better than the store/forum searches, IMO.

@Cybersox "...Unfortunately, searching the store will ONLY show products that are still for sale, which makes it fairly useless given the high turnover of PAs over the last few years..."

That is why I don't search the store proper, but My Products. Even discontinued items are included. There isn't a description or product page link, but you can click on the name to get a download link or open DIM. Like just about everyone else, I don't usually bother with store search

I had the embarrassing realisation a while back just how many lingerie sets I'd bought and then never actually used.

I ended up starting a very stupid series (of which this is only some, and much of the rest can be seen in my Gallery) of trying to fit them to one of my centaur characters, just so I could claim I hadn't bought them for nothing.

I would class that as an awesome idea rather than stupid :) Some great renders there and an excellent use of both centaurs and lingerie - two things which I've not managed to incorporate in any renders myself.

It can be both. I've had a lot of fun working on methods to put clothes on centaurs (which originally started as a joke on Discord but grew into an established part of my setting), but I'm not going to pretend that it's not me being kind of ridiculous.

(Here this is done using what are broadly auto-fit clones that I made, allowing me to reshape convert Genesis 8 clothes for the centaurs, but I have also made some clothes for them from scratch).

You may be right. Now that yo u mention it, I vaguely remember picking up a Josie 7 bundle from Biweekly-ish Freebies ages ago.

Haven't tried lingerie yet but I have bought several cheap/free 2 piece outfits that have interesting tops just for my centaur gals to have something new to wear.

...yeah, happens from time to time when I see someone recommend a product here and I click on the link only to find I already purchased it.

FMSCDesigns, where is the box that you mentioned where you can show only items that you own in the store? I see a box to hide the items that I own, which when unchecked will show owned and unowned items, but nothing that will only show the owned items.

You need the DAZ deals plugin to be able to see it.

Thanks FSMCDesigns. And sorry for misspelling your name earlier.

  • I've been finding a lot of products I have previously bought and never downloaded. At least five in the last three days. I have obviously more money than sense as my nana used to tell me.
