Use external stuff in Daz Studio

Hi all,

I've found some intersting stuff in places like Turbosquid or Smutbase, i was asking me if it was possible to use this sort of objects inDaz Studio ?
If yes, is there a tutorial to do that ?
Thanks a lot for many helps since the begining  of my Daz adventures yes

  • What format are they in? Daz Studio can import OBJ files, and FBX (but rigging rarely survives).

  • Most of time it is .obj files, is there a specific process to import its ?

    1. drag and drop the obj file into daz. on dialogue popup, turn off read material library (if you want)
    2. drag drop the textures onto the slots on the shader

I have an other folder with textures but how to know the distribution of each file ?

  • Do they follow a naming pattern? Probably they are either different sets, the way a lot of Studio content has multiple texture sets, or they are like the Genesis figures and each set applies to a different area. Despite lilweep it may be better to try importing with materials, that should give a clue (if it works at all) as to which map goes where.

  • My object has three parts.
In the Mtl file i've found for the first part :
    newmtl metal_Mat
        Ns 10.000000
        Ni 1.500000
        d 1.000000
        Tr 0.000000
        Tf 1.000000 1.000000 1.000000
        illum 2
        Ka 1.000000 1.000000 1.000000
        Kd 1.000000 1.000000 1.000000
        Ks 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000
        Ke 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000
        map_Ka dogcollar_metal_Mat_Diffuse.png
        map_Kd dogcollar_metal_Mat_Diffuse.png
        map_Ks dogcollar_metal_Mat_Specular.png
        map_bump dogcollar_metal_Mat_Normal.png
        bump dogcollar_metal_Mat_Normal.png

    I don't what it means...

  • If you import the item and select it, then go to the editor tab of the Surfaces pane and expand the entry for model you will probably see three surface gorups listed. One of the groups will be named "Metal", you want to put the dogcollar_metal_diffuse on the Base colour (if using Iray, in 3delight you will have a Diffuse property), the Specular map probably goes to something like Glossy Roughness or Glossy Reflectivity, and the normal map goes to the Normal property.

Excellent, it works fine thanks a lot

  • An other question : how to do the same process with complex file ? I have an object with lot of textures, and lot of wire/directory and I think that I will not able to map each parts with each texture.

Is it possible with an other tool and an additional step (Blender for example) to create a ready to use file in Daz ?

    Thanks

  • If the naming isn't clear, and there is no readme to guide you, I'm afraid it is a matter of trial and error. With luck the item/surface names and texture names will give at least some clue. If you can import the models into the like of Blender, and have it pick up the materials, then that would certainly act as a guide.
