Help with LAMH/Iray
I have had the misfortune of pulling my boss' name for the Christmas draw this year. <sigh> Since I usually give bottles of wine (he doesn't drink) or gift certificates (he doesn't shop at Walmart :)), I decided that I might try to put an image together for him and have it printed as a poster (we have a $ limit for the Xmas presents) so no framing. He is a veterinarian and originally from the Canadian prairies so I'm working on a western theme It will include a bison or two and I've used LAMH to put together some hair. I've rendered off a simple image of where I am so far with the hair, if anyone has suggestions for improvements. (Background is just for testing the hair!) I would really like to do an Iray render but the hair looks like hell in Iray. If I try to add enough hair quantity to make it look good the objs get so big that my system chokes. If I keep the hair quantity low it doesn't look good. Is anyone having success with LAMH and Iray and can give me some ideas? Or should I just stick to 3Delight for LAMH renders?

If your system doesn't have the hardware capable of handling the converted to obj hair in Iray, then yes, stick to 3Delight...but what are your system specs and what exactly happens if you up the quality of the hair and render in Iray? There may be some tweaks to help.
Windows 8.1 (64 bit), i7, 16GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce GTX 745 so sort of middle system. If I have a high amount of hair quantity (300,000) on all 4 shave groups that I have the system freezes when I went to render. I was only using an environment map with nothing else in the scene..
Yeah, it definitely wouldn't fit on the 745, so there's not going to be a boost from GPU rendering...16 GB should be fine for a CPU render, but it might be close. I'd probably just do a 3DL render, as the hair is going to be less of a problem.
OK thanks! The scene I have in mind will probably do just as well in 3Delight ...
