Favorites missing

I accidentally messed up my user interface the otherday, so I decided to reload my workspace.  Assuming it would reload the one that was loaded when I loaded the program.  It didn't, it was a saved workspace from over a year ago.  So now my Favorites folder is messed up.  I checked the Custom section (pressing F3 etc) and it seems as though all my favorites I had saved are there, but now they're not showing up at all.  I see a list of folders, but they all appear empty.  I don't see how the entries could exist, but no longer displayed.

Is there any way to restore them?  The whole favorite menu system seems unnessecarily complicated to edit or adjust.  I was half tempted to just delete all  the entries and start over, but even that seems a tad involved.

Any help is appreciated.

What Favorites folder ? If you mean 'Favorites' item on the menu bar, and now they're all gone or there's no sub-menu items or invalid when you click on it, etc, the only reason is that the links in b/t Custom Actions and Favorites menu items are broken, for some reason. Usually if the original file locations of Favorites items were change or deleted, you'll get messy result.

Not sure what 'Workspace' you loaded, the latest user's Layout you ever saved but dated a year ago? If it was, I'm afraid you have to to recreate Favorites items or manually drag Custom Actions from the list on the left (F3 UI) to the target menu items under Favorites.

  • Custom has the commands, it has nothing to do with displaying them - that is down to the tabs, menus and Toolbars, on the right. But what do you mean by empty folders? Entries in the tabs on the right - if so just drag the custom actions across to the places you want them.

  • Thanks for the help.  I honestly didn't know about the menu listing in the right pane, that may be able to help me.

I was talking about the favorites menu item  on the top bar, and how you can create folders within it, for example, I have a "character" menu where I save my favorite characters.  The favorites still show that "Character" folder (or menu item I guess), but when you select it, it doesn't bring up anything that is inside of it.

I tried what was suggested and noted that the links do appear broken.  It will be a pain in the butt to rebuild it, but this may be a blessing in disguise as I was wanting to re-organize them anyhow and now I know how... I'll just be doing far more than I had planned! heheh... hopefully this will work if I understand it correctly.  I basically have to drag items from the left pane over to the respective "folders" or menu entries (whatever you call them) on the right?  I'll try that, thanks again for your help.

  • The formal name for the folders is sub-menu.

If you still have the files but DS can't find them it is likely that they have either been moved or that the content diectory they are in is no longer connected - if you can undo that they should work again. One thing to check, if theya re on an external drive, is that the drive letter has not changed.

  • I followed the advice on here and I re-organized it all, dragging and dropping as suggested.  It worked great, so thanks again for all your kind assistance.  I spent several hours and re-organized my Favorites with more submenus (for G8F, G3F etc...) so it was less cluttered.  In the end, it now looks MUCH better than it did before.  And I backed up the menus.dsx file they are saved in so I can restore them (hopefully) in the future.

Are there any other files you think I should backup?

Again, thanks.  I wanted to re-organize the Favorite menu anyhow, so this problem sort of helped as I didn't know about how before now.

That's great !  Just one reminder: 1) Save your DS Layout perodically, especially after you customize your UI with more settings. 2) If you wanna have a backup, better backup the whole folder of : %AppData%\DAZ 3D\Studio4\, as well as %AppData%\DAZ 3D\Studio4 Public Build\  if you also use Public Build, because there're inter links among those *.dsx files and sub-folders in there.

Thanks again, good advice.  I backed up the entire folders just to be safe.
