RTX 4060Ti-16GB OR RTX 4070Ti-12GB?

Hello,

Looking to finally replace my old outdated laptop and configuring a new system. I am keeping price down as much as I can initially with the intent that once I am more proficient with DAZ, that I can upgrade later. I can pass along this graphic card and processor to my son for him a gaming PC later.

I won't be using this for gaming, just a 3D Creative machine as a hobbyist.

Processor will be an Intel i9-12900K.

Graphics card choices are as noted, RTX 4060Ti-16GB or RTX 4070Ti-12GB.

If you had to choose between these 2, which is a better choice given the difference in available VRAM, speed, etc?

Thanks,

DJ

  • If the scene won't fit onto the card then the speed is irrelevant - so the question is, will 12GB accomodate most of your scenes or would it frequently drop to CPU (or stop, depending on the fallback setting)?

An i9 is probably overkill for DS - most of the bottelnecks are either single-threaded (so moe cores won't help, theough the speed of individual cores will) or better handled by the GPU if at all possible.

I assume this is going to be a desktop system - laptop GPUs are not swappable.

  • Yes, a desktop system.

So, as i was thinking, the cheaper card - RTX 4060Ti but with more VRAM would be the better way to go. Currently it is $350.00 less than the RTX 4070 Ti

Initially, while learning the system, scene size will likely be small but saving money and getting more VRAM is a win between these two cards.

Thanks for the comment. Let me know if there are further thoughts.

  • Bear in mind that the recommendation is to have 3 times as much system RAM as VRAM, so that there is enough working space to build the render data for a scene that will push the limits of the GPU (it's not that you need thee xtra memory for all scenes, just that you need soemthing fo that order to get full benefit of what the card can handle). So for a 16 GB card that would realistically be 64GB system memory.

  • Thanks for all the info. I actually already have 64GB (2x32) spec'd in for the system memory so that should be good.

  • For content creation, the 4060Ti 16GB is essentially a 3060Ti only with 16GB of VRAM instead of 8.
As for speed, the 4070 Ti is much faster than 4060 Ti in both CUDA and OptiX tasks.
But you pay for that performance and if you're on a budget, 4060 Ti is still an okay option.

  • Personally I would go for the 16GB.  Even though the rendering is slower, it's infinite if you can't fit your scene into VRAM in the first place.  I wish I'd waited before buying a 4080 now.

Why? the 4080 has 16 gb of Vram also

    Huge price difference.

  • Thanks for all the input.

Given the decent price tag of the 4060 Ti and the 16GB memory that is what I am going to go with.
