Looks somewhqt like the one I'm working on, I'll post when I have something to show ;-)

So, first test of a vise, fully rigged. This one turned out modern, so I might make one with a more vintage look (brass and wood) in addition of metal.

Other than no adjustment screws it looks functional.

I saw that yes It was the lack of them on the stem to move it up/down and pivot on the horizontal I meant laugh Also the head, if that is a ball joint, will need one to lock it in position and also allow the head to be raised/lowered and turned over. Most of these would be thumb screws for quick and easy use including the jaw tightening screw. I don't know anyone who would buy a vice that needed to have a tool to tighten/slacken the jaws to catch/release the hook. When doing ten to twenty flies an hour speed and ease of use is mandatory, that is why the one I use is spring loaded and I just squeeze and release the lever smiley

Good points ;-) I modelled this after some pictures, but I have another one going, I think you like that head even better.

I did some changes ... now with a fast lock and some other detials ;-)

It isn't working for me. It seems too small and light.

Here are some Patent Drawings of vices. Some are more complicated than others but there are some basic shape ones too.

Here are some basic shape ones that are in use by most hobbyists.

There are also some basic tools for fly tying on this page.

This video gives an idea of how different vices work :) This is a simple lever vice. The videos also give an idea of scale.

Ok - I was modeliing after some images I found, but maybe it doesn't need a lot of adjustments for height etc, looks the like head is sturdy mounted onto the pin that either ends in a flat foot or a holder you attach to the table.
I think I got the idea, make a head with grip morphs sitting on a pin, and then two options for feet, either a flat one (as this) or a table mount.

This was the one I was looking without breaking any copyrights...

So, is it the Regal Design you are after? Or the "Razetti"?

I'm not a modeler, but I was an engineer, and I would have thought the Regal would be the easier one to model. In saying that the barrel ones with the lever at the back and adjustment screw which draws the jaws back down the tube to trap the hook between them and locks in place is the more common design in use.

    A bit like this one.

Giving the option of G clamp as in the link, which I prefer, or the stand would be a good idea.

It was the Regal I decided to aim for, with lever for open/close the jaws

    I aim for that

    Here Fishtales,

Vice foot - two materials, and a shoe for size comparition.

    Getting close?

Like you I have never seen one, only pictures, but they look fine to me. I do know they are made of solid metal so they are very heavy for stability.

  • TotteTotte Posts: 13,977

Thanks, I will make a G lock for a table with the same attachment size and then the head as a separate rigged piece, so you can choose which to use ;-)

Not just for me I'm sure there are others who will be interested :)

  • Oh, I'm interested. {{waves hands}}  I just don't tie flies myself so I don't really have an opinion.  I've tied a fly exactly once in my life.  However, I can already see doing some renders using this set.

  • TotteTotte Posts: 13,977

Thanks, I do hope more will be interested, it will have some items that can be used for other things as well.

  • How did the other fishing sets do?  I would think there are a lot of fishing enthusiasts doing 3D art.  Fishtales and I can't be the only ones.

Not bad, I think there is a potential in "real stuff" and not only extreme fantasy or scifi, I try to do diffierent stuff that doesn't exist in the store from time to time.

Real stuff is great.  I like that there are vendors doing real stuff and not just fantasy.  I'd really like it if someone did things like dead palm leaves, downed branches, broken power lines and some of the other stuff I see on the side of the road at times.  Real stuff adds a certain something to a render that doesn't glaringly say digital!

Now with UltraScatter there is a probably a market for such things, that before only has existsed really in the Vue marlketplace. Low poly objects to scatter around.

Yeah, I have that, too.  It would be nice to have more stuff to scatter.  :)  I mean there are plenty of trash type items for urban scenes, but not a lot of natural items for the sides of roads or country settings yet.

I think I now got a rotary vice head that will work .

That looks great, just one picky moment though, the lever to open the jaws should be on the far side and the body of the vice could be slightly longer so that the lever misses the stem when the head is rotated :)

It do misses it (just the camera angle that play tricks with your eye), and I can move the lever, i hope, without getting in trouble (the design is copyrighted to I have tried to change small details here and there to avoid getting sued.

Flipped the lever, and render from another angle

Getting sued would be bad.  All this fishing stuff reminds me of all the great times we had as kids growing up and fishing with my dad.  He was a more than avid fisherman and we would go on fishing trips to Canada, two weeks at a time, and go out on the lakes and fish from dawn til dusk.  Then spend two hours in the fishing shack cleaning fish. ( I can fillet fish with the best of them lol), We always caught enough fish in those two trips to have fish once a week all year round.  I didn't always appreciate it then but I have some really good memories now.

To get around the design patent would making the first cylinder into a square or rectangle and the body into a cylinder with flat top and bottom get around that?

I'm playing with different things, the head with the laws will probably not change (was a pain to model, lol), will probably do the changes to the back cylinder, spin, adjustment knob, but most I will use a totally different name ;-)
